The black edges of my vision were closing in and the pain in my head made every word feel like I was running a marathon.

“Tell me about the scar on his back.”

She paused. “He did it when he was a kid. Fell off his bike or something.”

“You didn’t sleep with Archer. I don’t believe a fucking word of it. You’re a lying, jealous bitch and when we’re done here, I’m going to make sure you don’t ever get to play with my fiancé’s band again, or in fact, any band linked with their label.”

“Who the fuck do you think you are? You can’t do that…”

I was just about to open my mouth when the door to the room flew open and a furious Archer stood there with Fox, Charlie, Lea, and Marshall behind him. Dawson appeared next to them, pushing through into the room. “No, but I can. You’re sacked, Eliza. Marshall will escort you out, and Addi will be calling you to discuss your contract with the label.”

She shoved me and I stumbled backward, but Archer was already there, catching me by the elbows so I didn’t fall.

“We’re playing tomorrow. You can’t do that.”

Dawson shrugged. “You did this to yourself. Now you can explain it to the rest of your band while you get the fuck out of here.”

There was a scuffle behind me as Lea yelled something and Fox tried to calm her down, but I was too busy looking at Archer, who had turned me in his arms, so I faced him.

“You stood up for me. You didn’t believe her lies,” he whispered, like he couldn’t believe it.

“How?” I managed to force out.

“The cameras. Marshall was worried about you, so he came to find me and I watched you from the sound booth security panel while he went to the bus. I heard every word. I still can’t believe you stood up for me like that.”

I cupped his cheek, my mouth feeling weird. I tried to say, “I’ll always defend you, Arch,” but I wasn’t sure if the words ever left my mouth because the world vanished around me.

Chapter 40

Archer

Neeslurredsomethingasher eyes rolled back in her head and her body turned to stone in my hands before she started fitting violently.

“Lay her down. Carefully,” Marshall yelled. “On her side, tilt her head back and then get off her. Do it now, Archer.”

“Nee,” I cried, watching her convulse, her lips turning blue.

“She deserves everything she gets,” Eliza spat out angrily. In a heartbeat Lea lurched at her again, only Fox wasn’t fast enough this time, and she punched her hard in the face, making her nose explode.

“Get her out of the building, Marshall,” Dawson instructed calmly, never taking his eyes off Nee. “And call an ambulance.”

Marshall moved without making a sound, grabbing Eliza by the arm, forcing her from the room.

“Nee, Nee, please be okay,” Lea screamed before burying her face in Fox’s chest as he wrapped his arms around her.

Within minutes, two paramedics entered the room, asking for Nee’s medical history and what medication she was on. I knew she kept a book in her bag with all her medical details in it, just in case something like this happened, so I found it and passed it to them, all the while watching the love of my life still fitting uncontrollably.

“Okay, sir. Who’s her next of kin?”

“I’m her fiancé. Her dad is in the UK.”

He looked down at her and then back at me. “You’re gonna want to call him. We’re going to give her something to try to stop the fit, but we need her at the hospital A-SAP so we can give her a brain scan.”

Charlie pressed his hand to my shoulder. “She’s a fighter, Arch.”

I couldn’t say a word as I watched them do what they needed to do, wondering if, once again, fate had other ideas about us being together.

Her seizure had stopped by the time they got her to the ambulance, but here we were, hours later, and she was still out of it. Fox and Charlie had taken Lea back to the hotel as she was so upset, seeing her friend like that, that she wasn’t helping anyone. Marshall stood outside her room and Dawson currently leaned on the back of an empty chair across from me.
