“I need some time off, Dawson. Fuck, the last few months… I’ll be honest, they’ve nearly broken me.”

“I know. I’ve watched you go through it. But she’ll be okay.”

Wrapping my fingers over her bracelet, I sighed. “As soon as she wakes up, I’m going to demand she marries me.”

“Maybe let her talk to the doc first and work out what’s going on. What if her tumor has come back?”

“I fucking hate how straight to the point you always are. Can’t you sugar coat anything?”

“Nope,” he replied without a hint of sarcasm. “What if she needs chemo or more operations? What if she forgets you again?”

“Then I will sit with her, hold her hand, shave her head before I shave mine, comfort her when she’s sick, in pain, afraid and if I have to, I’ll make her remember again and again that I love her more than anything in the world. Every fucking day, if I have to. Have you never seen50 first dates?IfAdam Sandlercan do it forDrew Barrymore, then it’s good enough for me and Nee.”

“If I had a heart, it would be melting right now. She’s lucky to have you.”

“Nope, that’s where you’re wrong. We’re lucky to have each other. I don’t care what caused this. It will never change how much I love her.”

“How long do you want off?”

“Well, if Addi and Mav have three months off each year, maybe that’s the solution. Give me three months… we could probably all use it.”

“I’ll have a chat with the label, but given what’s going on, it might be good for all of you to take a break.”

Suddenly I noticed how exhausted Dawson looked. He had so many walls up we barely knew a thing about him, despite him managing us for almost a year. Slumping down into the seat he’d just been leaning on, he pulled up his sleeves and pushed his fingers through his hair.

“What the hell?” I asked, staring at the line of cursive text tattooed along his left forearm.

He glanced down at where I was looking, grimacing when he realized what he’d done.

“Can we not? You’ve got enough on your plate without listening to my woes.”

“Go on. Cheer me up. What does it even say?”

He held out his arm. “Four makes us whole. If one leaves, we all fall.” And that, apparently, is the elemental sign for earth.

“Makes sense. You’re as emotional as a rock.”

Dawson cocked his eyebrow.

“And Fox and Lea have matching ones?”

“Yeap, apart from Fox is water and Lea is Air.”

“And the fourth.”

Scrubbing his hand over his face, Fox stared at the floor. “Marshall.”

I couldn’t help the splutter that fell from my lips. “What, so you were forced into getting matching tattoos you all hate?”

“No, we pissed off a witch who cursed us and we woke up with these tattooed on our arms. None of us remember getting them. Apparently, we’re bound together and if one of us tries to leave, it will be ‘our undoing’.” He said the last words in a pretend scary voice and rolled his eyes.

Looking over at Nee to check she was okay, I let the laughter come. “Oh, God. I have to tell Charlie. He’ll piss himself. You got cursed… really?”

“Fuck off.”

“Is it that bad, being stuck with Fox and Lea? And Marshall seems nice. I mean, meaty, and I imagine hung like a horse, but a nice horse.” I snorted, covering my mouth with my spare hand.

“Marshall is a control freak, but he’s definitely hung, so I guess he’d be forgiven. And Lea and Fox and I have been having fun… lots of it, for months, but relationships…” He shuddered. “I don’t do them and now I’m stuck with the three of them, for what? Forever? That’s not me.”
