She laughed softly as she stared at the Egyptian section. “In its time, this probably was classed as modern. But honestly, I love this stuff. I love that in each stage of history there has been art and even after we’re long gone, art will still be here. It’s like an echo of the people that created it.” I watched her shiver.

“Cold?”

“In awe. Really, I’m blown away. How long do we have here?”

I smiled. “As long as you want.”

Clapping her hands excitedly, she pressed her lips to my cheek, knocking my cap slightly. “Thank you,” she whispered. “By the way, I love the disguise.”

Winking, I readjusted my cap that was pulled low so hopefully, no one would recognize me, but then I knew there was Pete and three security guards dotted around, making sure no one came near us. Dawson had done a great job of arranging everything for me.

That was six hours ago and now we were curled up in the warmth of the car heading to the next stop that Ionee had no idea about.

“I’m starving,” she admitted, her tummy rumbling loudly.

“Well, you refused to eat lunch in favor of looking at art, so it’s no wonder.”

Her hands flew to her mouth. “Oh God, you were bored stupid, weren’t you? We were there for hours. I’m so sorry, Arch. I’m sure you had better ways to spend your day off today.”

I tugged her hands from her face, running my knuckles along her jaw, loving how her eyes fluttered closed from my touch.

“I would have stayed there all day. Watching your face light up was everything. I mean it, Nee, I would do anything in my power to see you smile like you did today.”

Her eyes popped open, darkening as she looked at me. “I love you, Arch. More than I ever thought possible. I swear, you’re burned into my soul.”

Before I could say a word, the car slowed and the security glass lowered. “Archer, we’re here. I’m coming with you and the other boys will be close by, just like before. It’s busier here, so both of you, please keep your wits about you, and if we ask you to move, we need you to move without question.”

“Understood, Pete,” I reassured him. No one had been happy about this part of my plan, but I wanted to give Nee a night to remember and this was the perfect place.

“Archer, what’s going on?” Ionee’s brows furrowed with concern. I pressed my thumb to the wrinkles that creased across her nose until her face relaxed.

“Don’t worry, it’s just a busy place, so we’re more likely to encounter some fans, even with my excellent disguise.” Ionee laughed, nodding, telling me she understood.

“Okay. Now, feed me, Arch.”

We rounded the corner to be met with the glass fronted neighborhood of Hudson Yard, its glittery lights sparkling in the dark New York evening.

“Wow,” Ionee gasped, taking my hand as she stepped out of the car.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it? This place has everything… food, shopping, an amazing view. I thought we could get lost here for a few hours and have some fun rather than sitting in some fancy restaurant. What do you think?” I asked, but I already knew her answer.

“Hell, yes. Do they do burgers? I really want a New York burger.”

“They do and they have some great places to get dessert too. Come on. I know the perfect place to start.”

We found a table in a quiet corner of a small eaterie, both of us inhaling a huge burger, fries, and onion rings finished off with a pint of lager and then an espresso martini to wake us up before the food coma hit.

“That was the best burger ever,” she groaned, rubbing her belly. “Right, where next?”

“You’re not afraid of heights are you beautiful?”

Narrowing her eyes, she shook her head.

“Good, come on.”

“Don’t make me jump out of a plane, because that would be a waste of all that lovely food.”

Taking her hand in mine, I led her to the elevator. “We could have climbed, but I thought I’d let you take the easy route.”
