Dawson opened his mouth, and I leaned in so only he could hear me. “Sit.”

He nodded, and they moved to a booth near the wall, where I could still keep an eye on them while I ordered. When I was done, I took a seat next to Dawson.

“Will you miss all this?” Lea asked, offering me a wink. “When you come back to rainy England?”

“I’ll miss the weather. And the food. And accents I understand.”

“But you’ll get to enjoy central heating, fish and chips with mushy peas, spotted dick, and so much rain.”

“Spotted what?” I spluttered. “Is this something you made up like the tea alarm?”

“Once you see the wonders of England, you’ll never want to leave,” Dawson replied as our snoball’s arrived.

“We have a rainbow with marshmallow fluff.”

I pointed to Lea, who took one look and let out a massive squeal.

“Then a strawberry cheesecake stuffed snoball.”

I nudged Fox, whose eyes widened. “That looks like a bit of me.”

“Next is a silver fox.”

I pointed to myself. “Well, I am the oldest, so it seemed fitting.” Laughter erupted as I took it from the waitress.

“And finally, the sunset one.” She handed it to Dawson before she left us to it.

“You said you would pick us the perfect one. I don’t think you get me at all if you think this is what I’d order,” Dawson mumbled, poking his concoction with a spoon.

I took a mouthful of mine, letting it melt against my tongue before I replied. “Remember what I told you that night after the gig?”

He nodded.Trust me.

And without saying a word, he took a huge spoonful and swallowed it down, before taking another one, humming out his pleasure.

“You like, Daw?” Fox laughed, lifting a spoonful of his own to his mouth.

He nodded enthusiastically. “What’s in here?”

“Strawberry, mango, pineapple, and condensed milk.”

“It’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted. We have to move here and never leave.”

“I agree,” Lea mumbled, marshmallow whip all over her top lip.

“You have a little…” I pointed, and she blushed, wiping her lips with her napkin, missing most of the creamy remnants.

“Good?”

“Perfect.” I smiled, looking around at the three of them, trying not to think about how this felt way more thanjusta job and a random hook up.

Lea

“Yes,Freddie.I’mhomein three days. I understand, but everything is as far along as I can get it, so just relax and focus on the birthdays and weddings. Jane and Lily are handling things, so any calls you get looking for me, pass it on to them and they can decide how urgent it is.”

“But—”

I knew he was going to continue complaining about my absence, but I shut him down. “I know it wasn’t ideal, but she’s my best friend and she lost a lifetime’s worth of memories. When Archer found her, I couldn’t just stay at home… we have just over a month until the big day, and I’ll be back soon for the nominations next week. Right, I have to go get ready for an event.”
