“Well, I don’t remember much and I think I’d remember getting a tattoo,” Dawson replied.

“What does it mean?” I asked.

“It’s all a bit hazy, but I remember her telling us we had to stay together… forever,” Marshall grunted, perching on the edge of the bed, dragging his hand over his face. “And if we don’t,we all fall.”

“What's the worst that could happen?” Fox quipped.

“Y’all want to take a chance and find out? We’re in the home of witches. You guys might not believe in them in the UK, but where I’m from, curses, dark magic, it’s as real as we are. Lea took us to a God damn crypt and somehow we all woke up branded with a pissed off witch’s words. She cursed us.”

“This is all my fault,” I whispered, pulling my knees up to my chest, trying not to look at the three of them.

Fox took my hand in his, twisting our fingers together. “Le, I knocked her over, so it’s my fault.”

“And I should have been protecting you, so you could say it’s my fault,” Marshall grumbled, looking furious, and I wasn’t sure if it was at himself or us.

We all turned to Dawson, who held his hands up. “Fuck this. I hadnothingto do with it, and I refuse to blame myself. I went with you to the club, but nothing that happened in there was on me.”

“Your dancing was pretty criminal,” Marshall retorted, making Dawson scowl and the rest of us burst out laughing.

“Children, the lot of you. God, am I really stuck with you all for life? Is that what these words mean?”

And in that moment, the laughter died away as the enormity of the ink on our skin sank in.

Chapter 14

Fox

“LeaandIarehaving lunch with Charlie, Arch, and Nee, and then we have two days on the bus. When we get to wherever we’re going next, we should sit down and talk,” I suggested.

“You want us to separate? Have you read the tattoo on your arm? You might not believe those words, but I do. We’re stuck together, whether we like it or not,” Marshall bit back, sounding angry, and I hated it.

“Don’t worry, Marshall. You’ll be following right behind. You don’t need to bestuck with us,” I fired back.

“Hey, please don’t argue,” Lea let out, pulling on some leggings that she must have left in here last night and one of my t-shirts.

“Sorry, I feel like shit, and last night is just a hazy blur.”

“Same,” we all mumbled at the same time.

“I just—” Marshall looked between us, looking pained.

“Look, why don’t we take one bus and put Charlie on with Archer and Ionee?” Dawson suggested, rubbing his hand over the back of his neck.

“Oh, God, I’m going to be sick,” Lea cried as she ran for the bathroom as Marshall’s face froze and Dawson looked like he was planning to see how far he could run before we noticed he was gone.

“Well, isn’t this going to be fun?” I mumbled, running my hand through my hair before pulling it into a bun. “I’m going to go get lunch. Tell Lea I’ll meet her there.”

“We shouldn’t be apart, we have no idea—”

I cut Marshall off. “I don’t think it means we have to be together in every waking moment. I’m not leaving. I’m going to get some food and catch up with my friends. If you think we’re going to be joined at the hip, especially when you’re acting like a douchbag, like you are now. Jesus, yesterday we were all happy and smiling, I’m not sure what this…” I pulled up my sleeve and waved my arm. “Has changed between us.”

“I don’t do relationships,” Marshall replied.

“Oh right, like you don’t do men?” Daw scoffed.

Anger danced over Marshall’s face.

“You two fight it out. Tell Lea where I am.”
