I sat across from him, almost laughing at how huge he looked sitting in the small seat.

“Are you sleeping with Fox?” he asked, before even taking a sip of his coffee.

I’d just lifted my mug, but the shock of his question had me putting it back down again. “No. Why would you ask that?”

“Addi told you that we know about your tattoos… your curse, or whatever you think it is. I need to know the truth.”

“I’m not sleeping with Fox.”

“Lea?”

I frowned. “What has this got anything to do with my job?”

“Everything.”

“Yes. I am.”

“And have you fooled around together? Whether you’ve slept with Fox… or Dawson, have you… how do I put this… are you all climbing into bed together at the end of the day?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Yes.”

“Hey, I’m not judging and I’m not having a go. I just need to know.”

“Why?”

“Because you can’t be a bodyguard for Fox if you’re in a relationship with him.”

I reared back. “I’m not in a fucking relationship with him. I hardly know him. I hardly know any of them. I went to a club, doing my job and I woke up with a tattoo, a memory of an angry witch and all I know is that whenever we’ve tried to sleep apart on that fucking tour bus the aircon goes off everywhere but one room and we’re forced to spend the night together. I don’t think I should lose my job over it.”

Matt’s face softened. “Shit, sorry. I should have started with that. You’re not losing your job. Not at all. I just needed to know that I was right to want to move you somewhere else.”

“I can’t be away from them… curse and all.” I held out my arm, letting him read the words inked there.

He raised his eyebrow. “And you really all just woke up with them. No recollection?”

“None.”

“Shit. And you’ve had no contact from anyone who might have given you them or taken photos of you getting them… nothing?”

“Nope.”

“God, that is strange.”

I took a mouthful of coffee, waiting to hear what Matt had to say next.

“Look, I’ll be honest. We did a background check on you.” I struggled to swallow, the bitter liquid burning my throat. “We do it with anyone we bring into the label. You wouldn’t believe the things that have happened.”

“Try me?”

“Erm, okay. Tanner’s assistant wasn’t who she said she was. She blew up his life before poisoning him and nearly killing my wife.”

“Wow. Yeap, I can see why you’d want to do the background check. And what did you find?”

His forest green eyes locked on mine. “Everything.”

“Right.” Anxiety bubbled in my chest.

“So I know about your old job… your training. Can I ask why you quit?”
