Aidan was going to make sure of that.
“Two rules,” Emma said, pointing at him. “Don’t fall in love with her. And do not let her fall in love with you.”
“Fine,” he lied.
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Lily brushed her teethwith vigor, spat, and then rushed out to her bedroom. She pulled on her coat, grabbed her bag, and then left her apartment.
When she stepped outside, her boots skidded on the ice, and she grabbed the railing.
Shit.
The Uber pulled up, and she climbed inside. She didn’t care it was blowing her budget. She had to get back to see her father.
Her mom had kicked her out eventually the night before. Her father had been sleeping when she’d arrived, and while he’d woken a few times so she could tell him she loved him, he wasn’t very alert.
But it had been worth it, flying for hours to see him open his eyes.
She’d bawled silently, shaking, holding his hand.
Afterward, Lily was exhausted and agreed a few hours of sleep would benefit her.
Matt, who had shown up that evening, offered to drive her home. In the past, she’d been careful to never let him near her residence, even though, as her boss, he had her personnel records. She saw it as a healthy boundary, given his behavior in the office.
But he had surprised her by picking up some dinner and walking her to the door, handing it to her, and then dropping a light kiss on her head.
He’d been really lovely, actually.
But he wasn’t Aidan.
He didn’t make her heart sing and thighs press together with need.
