Emma let out a sigh and dropped her hands.
“I’m not questioning her intelligence. Or her heart. I love that girl. I grew up with her. But she’s lived a sheltered life. Coming here was a big deal.”
Aidan nodded and stared down at the grass they were standing on, considering her words. Maybe he had been the naive one? Maybe he’d seen what he wanted to see.
“I like her, Em,” he admitted when he lifted his eyes. “I’m going to Chicago.”
“Don’t,” she said, shaking her head.
Logan cursed.
“Please don’t, Aidan,” Emma said. “You will destroy her life when you’re done with her.”
Who said he would be...

Was Emma right? Would this all fall to bits, and he’d just end up hurting Lily?
“Handsy Matt is with her,” he said, as if that explained everything.
“Who?” She frowned.
“Who the hell is Handsy Matt?” Logan asked.
“Wait. Her boss, Matt?” Emma asked, and he could see the clogs in her brain turning and working it out.
Aidan nodded.
“He was at the hospital when I rang. Don’t worry, she didn’t hear me. Long story.” He waved his hand out, knowing that was too hard to explain. “I’m leaving later tonight. I need to know the guy isn’t taking advantage of her.”
Logan moved closer to Emma and wrapped his arm around her lower back. He had concern in his eyes.
Funny how your spouse’s friends became a part of your life. And Aidan realized that no matter what happened between him and Lily, she would always be a part of their extended family.
You’re going to be Emma’s brother-in-law.
Clearly, Lily was much smarter than he was.
“That guy is a creep,” she admitted. “The timing of this is terrible. I should be there with her.”
Aidan shook his head.
“Enjoy your honeymoon. Enjoy the rest of your special day. I will go to Chicago and sort this out.”
Emma shook her head.
“This is so wrong. I’m her best friend. You shouldn’t be anywhere near her.”
Aidan felt his chest tightening.
“Yeah, well, that might be true. But right now, I care about her and I’m not walking away. I told her that last night and she ran away without telling me,” Aidan said, then held up his hand when Emma began to interrupt.
“I know her dad is dying. But she could’ve texted me.”
Logan rubbed her arm. “Babe, I think Aidan likes Lily a lot more than he realizes.”
