“It’s going to be okay, Mom. We’re going to be okay.”

She was pretty sure she was talking to herself as much as her mom. Lily let her mind drift back to the night she told Aidan about her dad’s illness. How he’d listened and comforted her. It had been nice.

Really nice.

It would be nice to have him here with her. In reality, it would be significantly more complicated than that. But the thought of having Aidan’s big powerful arms around her, to feel his powerful presence supporting her so she could let go, even for a moment, and stop being strong, would be incredible.

And just a dream.

Yes, Matt had been comforting last night, but he was her boss, who she couldn’t say no to. What would happen if he asked more of her one day?

Emma had warned her, and Lily had brushed her off. Last night in the car, the way he’d really given her no choice but to let him hold her, she didn’t like that.

Aidan would have hit the roof.

But Aidan wasn’t here.

Except she couldn’t stop thinking of him. Goddamn it, she didn’t want to never see him again.

Never kiss him again.

Never not feel his body against hers.

Ugh.

Lily didn’t want to feel like this, but she did. She regretted not running down to his room and waking him up. Even just for one more kiss.

Hindsight was a shitty thing.

At the time, she’d been in a state of panic.

God, maybe he had heard and didn’t want to get up and do an awkward goodbye. Perhaps that was what he was ringing to say last night?

It was driving her insane not knowing.

She tapped her phone and saw it was now nearly one in the afternoon. Aidan would be awake in Hawaii.

But no message.

She let out a sigh.

“Are you all right, sweetheart? I know this is tough. Shall we go back?” her mom asked.

“Yeah,” she said, finishing her cold coffee and placing her cup on the saucer. “Mom, how did you know Dad was the one? How did you know you were in love?”

Water filled her mother’s eyes as she smiled.

“Oh, that’s easy. When I knew that I didn’t want to live a single day without him. That Icouldn’tlive a day without him. At least not as happy as when I was with him.”

Lily didn’t know what made her ask that.

Okay, she did know.

Aidan had moved into her head and wouldn’t evacuate. Surely, she hadn’t fallen for him in just a few days.

That was insane.

Seeing the teary smile on her mom’s face brought her back to what was important.
