“Aidan Dufort. Right. What did I miss?” her father asked, his eyes darting between them.

Lily rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. “He’s a billionaire, Dad. A. Billionaire.”

“So?” he repeated. “My girl is good enough for some rich man. Who told you to think like that?”

“No one. He’s just...different from me,” she snapped.

“Because his bank account is fatter than yours? Lilypop, I taught you better than that.” He coughed.

“Darling, you know what she means.” Her mom patted his chest.

Then he started coughing harder, and the machines began beeping.

God, please no.

Lily jumped up. “Dad!”

Please don’t take him because we were fighting over Aidan. Oh, my God.

“Dad!” she cried as the nurses came flying in and moved them away so they could do their thing.

“He just needs a drink,” her mom said, and Lily frowned.

A drink? He has cancer and mom thinks he needs a fucking drink?

“Clear the room, please,” one nurse said, nudging them out of the room.

Her mom started crying and Lily put her arm around her, steering her out into the hallway.

“Clear the hallway please,” someone called out and her mom began to sob as Lily pulled her into her arms.

“It’s okay, Mom,” she cried, wishing Aidan was there even though it made no sense.

They walked down to the waiting room, and, after a few hours, they were eventually allowed back in. It was clear things had then changed.

There was no more teasing and flirting. But there was a lot of handholding and softly spoken words.

Lily wrapped her cardigan around herself and sat quietly after telling her dad she loved him about ten times.

He patted her hand. “Forget the money, Lily. Follow your heart.”

She smiled and kissed his cheek, then dozed for a few hours in the chair, feeling like the ground beneath her was crumbling.

What was she going to do without her dad?

He’d been her rock all her life.
