CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Lily’s mom was holdinga cup and straw to her dad’s mouth when she walked back in. Predictably, she gave her that knowing-mom smile but didn’t say anything.

Lily knew it wouldn’t last.

“Hey, Dad,” Lily said, walking around to the other side of the bed.

“Lilypop, will you please put your mother out of her misery and tell her who the young man was?” he said, winking at her.

He’d obviously kept their conversation secret and she kind of loved him for it. Even if she would tell her mom everything, anyway.

Her mom gasped. “Gary, I told you not to say anything.”

She loved watching her parents tease one another. They’d done it for as long as she could remember. Perhaps that’s why she liked...no. She wasn’t going down that path. Yes, she liked Aidan, but no, he wasn’t the right man for her.

Thinking anything else was a recipe for disaster.

If she couldn’t be clear on that in her own mind, she wouldn’t convince Aidan.

“From the look of his tan, I’d say he was someone she met in Hawaii,” her mom said. “Does he live here in Chicago?”

Lily bit her lip. “No,”

“Aidan is a lovely name. He’s also a very handsome man, Lily.”

She wasn’t going to argue with that. “The way he was looking at you... My goodness, it reminded me of your dad.”

“I never looked at you in any way.” He lowered his brows but shot Lily a wink.

Her mom blushed. “You most certainly did. And you still do.”

Lily sat down in the seat behind her and let them keep up their little flirtation. Who knew if it might be their last.

Her chest tightened.

What a gift to have this moment with them. Just over a day ago, she wasn’t sure if she was going to make it here in time to see her father one last time. Now, while he might seem to be in good spirits, his movements were slow, and he was gray around the gills.

“He’s Logan’s brother,” Lily said in an almost defeated tone when they turned to her for more details. To her, it was explanation enough.

“What a shame you didn’t meet him earlier. Double wedding.” Her father winked.

Oh, I did. He put his hands inside my panties.

And there was no way she was sharing that naughty bit of information. Also, there would be no wedding. That’s not what this was.

Even if Aidan thought it was.

It wasn’t.

She was very clear about that.

“Wait. Aidan Dufort? Oh my God. Lily. Logan’s brother,” her mom said, finally clicking.

She pressed her lips together, puffing out her cheeks, and nodded. All likeyup, never going to happen.
