They quickly washed and dried each other, then climbed into bed. For the rest of the night, Aidan held Lily while she cried and dozed.

By morning, Aidan knew, without a shadow of doubt, that he was completely in love with Lily Peterson.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Her dad was gone.

She’d known this day was coming, but really had no idea how hollow she would feel. The man who had been her protector and biggest fan all her life had just gone.

Life made no sense.

As if to not leave her alone and unprotected life, God, the universe, or some magical being had given her Adian.

At least for now.

And the beautiful man was lying in her bed—her bed—right here in Chicago. Watching him sleep peacefully, with not a single cheeky or dark expression on his face, was a gift. He always woke when she did, but it was likely she’d kept him awake with her tossing and turning.

The way he’d fucked her in the shower had been the outlet she’d needed. It was like she was sad and angry all at once.

Aidan had shouldered it.

She hadn’t missed how protective he’d been when Matt turned up last night. Lily knew she should care if Aidan had offended him, and if she still had a job, but the truth was all she cared about right now was her broken heart.

And she was still creeped out by the hug in the car a few nights ago. There was no way she was telling Aidan about that.

Still, she did need her job, and so she would ring Matt after the funeral and apologize.

After that, she would have to make some decisions. Lily knew she couldn’t stay working there. Emma and Aidan were right. Matt was a creep.

Right now, she appreciated the comfort Aidan was giving her. His arm was under her head, his hand resting gently on her hip and his breaths steady.

Lily lifted her hand and softly ran her finger over his lips. He had beautiful lips. Full and plump, and his jaw was perfect.

So was his nose.

Even his eyelashes were long, dark, and thick.
