After a few minutes, she lifted her face, and he wiped her hair away and kissed her nose.

“I’m going to go,” he said, and a sob escaped her. “I’ll be here for another forty-eight hours. Then, if I don’t hear from you, I’ll leave. Forever.”

“Aidan, I—”

“Don’t say any more. I love you, Lily. I know this is real. But if you don’t, then that’s not something I can force. I realize that now.”

Aidan’s lips pressed to hers and held there for the longest time. Then he stood, grabbed his bags as her heart physically shattered, and he gazed down at her one last time.

His bright beautiful eyes were gone, replaced with angry hurt dark globes.

Then Aidan Dufort walked out of her life.

Forever.

He just wouldn’t know that for another two days.

CHAPTER THIRTY

Aidan tossed his bagsonto the bed and let out the curse he’d been holding since he left Lily’s apartment.

“Fucking mother fucking fuck!”

He kicked the sofa.

After parking, he’d gone for a long walk in the snow, trying to make sense of everything, and it hadn’t helped at all. In fact, the more he came to terms with everything Lily had said, the more fury and pain flowed through his veins.

He’d lost her.

He knew it in his bones.

She might not be an overly confident woman, but Lily knew her own mind. Aidan wanted to blame her grief, but instead of clinging to him for comfort, she had pushed him away.

His father had done so much damage that night on Maui. More than he’d realized.

She said he’d made her feel like a loser.
