Jesus.

Hate poured through him for the man who’d destroyed the greatest thing to ever happen to him. Because fuck the money, fuck his success. Without Lily, he didn’t want any of it.

Without thinking, Aidan grabbed his phone and dialed his parents’ number. His father could issue her a fucking apology.

He might be angry and full of pain right now, but he wasn’t giving up.

Forty-eight hours was a long time.

“Dufort residence,” his mom said, answering the phone in a chirpy voice that grated at him.

“Mom. It’s me. Where’s Dad?” he demanded angrily.

Silence.

“Hi, darling. Nice to hear from you.”

“Yeah, hi. Are you okay?” Aidan said, trying to pull back his mood. His mom didn’t deserve it.

She laughed. “Yes, I am. Thank you.”

For the love of God.

“Mom. I need to speak to Dad. Urgently.”

“You left things poorly in Hawaii,” she said, and he rolled his eyes. “Why don’t you give it some time?”

Time? Fuck. Time he did not have.

“Which is why I need to speak to him. Do you have any idea what he’s done? The way he spoke to Lily. He’s messed everything up. I need to speak to him. He’s going to give her an apology. For God’s sakes. Put him on!” he growled, dumping it all out.

Silence.

“Mom!” Aidan cried.

“No.”

Aidan’s head shot up. “What? Did you just say no?”

His compliant and agreeable mother had just said no. What in the hell?

“Yes. I said no,” she replied, and her calm voice was beginning to make him lose his mind. “You sound angry. When you’ve calmed down, you can speak to him.”

He drew in a deep breath, so he didn’t say something he’d regret. And as the oxygen reached his brain cells, Aidan started to wonder if he was in an alternative universe.

Or he was missing something.

“What’s going on, Mom? Dad loves a good argument,” Aidan said, then repeated, “Go get him or tell me what the hell is going on?”

There was some rustling noise, then he heard a door close.

“Aidan,” Christine Dufort sighed. “You must keep this to yourself for now.”

His heart sunk knowing, almost instinctually, what she was going to say.

“Your father is not well. Four months ago, your father had a stroke. A minor one, but the doctor is worried.”

“Why didn’t he tell us?” Aidan cursed, dropping his head.
