CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Aidan stood beneaththe trees and pulled the collar of his black coat up around his ears, then plunged his hands into his pockets.

The coat was Prada.

Lily would hate it.

He wished she would look up and see him, but she was standing at her father’s grave as they lowered him into the ground. Around her, a dozen or so black-clad bodies did the same thing.

He watched her mom hold a handkerchief or maybe tissues to her face—he was too far away to tell—and turn her head onto Lily’s shoulder, sobbing.

What the hell was he doing here?

You love her.

He did. He loved her with his entire body and soul. For two days, he’d been walking around like his heart had been torn from his chest and stomped on.

Well, forty-six hours, to be exact.

The jet was fueled and ready to go because Aidan hadn’t heard a word from Lily. Yet here he was, standing in the fucking cold Chicago weather, hoping she would look up.

Hoping she would love him.

Hoping that despite his father’s harsh words, Lily would want him anyway and find a way to navigate a world where they could be happy together with him.

To trust him.

To know that he’d never let anyone in their world hurt her like that again.

She had no reason to. He hadn’t spoken up that night as he should have, but he knew he’d never freeze again.

Aidan thought hiding their romance was more important that night. He’d been wrong. He hadn’t known he was in love with her.

He hadn’t spoken to his father personally yet, promising his mom he would take a breath and calm down before he did.

If he left Chicago without Lily, it would take a while before he could forgive him. But after seeing Lily lose her father, Aidan knew he had to get over it. If Andrew died suddenly, it would be just another regret to live with.

He glanced around the park, taking in all the graves.

Fuck, life was short.

He didn’t want to live with regrets.

Aidan was just about to take a step toward Lily and let her know he was there when he saw another familiar face.

He froze.

No fucking way.

Matt moved in beside Lily and put his arm around her. Then he pulled her into his chest and began rubbing her back.

She went, and that hurt more than anything.

That should be me. That should be fucking me!
