Lily was proud of her best friend, but she felt like a fish out of water in Emma’s world. In fact, traveling to Philadelphia for her engagement party was the first time she’d left Chicago.

She was a little embarrassed.

These people were far more worldly than her, and Lily was only there because of Emma. Because of a childhood friendship that hung on by a thread.

Yet no one had made her feel like she didn’t belong. Everyone was very friendly.

Then there was Aidan.

Her cheeks heated as the memories of that night returned, just as her plane landed on Oahu.

He was everything she was not. Wealthy, worldly, successful, sexy, and clearly very confident with his sexuality.

Lily had only slept with two boys.

Men.

Actually, no, they were boys.

Number one had been Todd Bueller when she was a senior in high school. What a fumbling mess that was. So much so, she wished she could forget it altogether.

Especially the moment with the condom.

Lily had been told it was her job to put it on a man, so she’d taken it from him, ripped it open... and it had fallen out. Simultaneously Todd had grabbed at it, and the thing had slipped out of both their grasps onto the floor of the car.

Yeah, this all happened in the back seat of his dented Toyota.

It got worse.

When it fell to the floor, both of them went diving for it, in their anxiety, and their heads banged together. While Todd rubbed his head, Lily retrieved it and forced the rubber onto his now semi-hard member. Cue the awkward smiles and groping while Todd got interested again.

Her boobs still ached from all the squeezing.

Ugh.

Then there was Joe Goodman. He’d worked in the store down from Martha’s and every day the tall dark-skinned man would walk past the shop and stare. One day he winked through the window at her, and she’d blushed, wishing he would introduce himself.

Her wish was answered. That night after work, he was waiting for her outside on the street.

“Can I walk you to the bus?” Joe had asked.

“I don’t even know your name,” Lily had replied, figuring she shouldn’t be too easy.

“Name’s Joe.” He had held out his hand, and she’d shaken it.

“How do you know I catch the bus?”

“Because you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen you catch it every day for six weeks.”

It was the first time a boy had made her feel beautiful. They’d dated for two years, and while Joe was a lot more confident and skilled than Todd, and Lily had mastered the condom, there were not a lot of sparks between them.

Joe ended up being offered a job in the city and they’d both known it was time to say goodbye. They made empty promises to each other to stay in contact, and neither of them had.

Since then, Lily had gone on a few dates, which ended in the odd kiss, but she’d never wanted it to go any further.

Not because she didn’t like sex—she did.

She was just hoping for a bit more spark, like she saw in the movies or read about in books.
