She met his eyes. “You knew.”

“Money might be able to help him. If he had time and with further research one day, but no one has been able to find the miracle cancer cure yet,” Aidan said. “AI might be able to one day. I’m working with an advanced team on a number of medical projects.”

Wow, he was?

“But money doesn’t theoretically give us the things we truly want in life.”

Aidan shrugged as he continued to think out loud.

“Don’t get me wrong. It doesn’t suck. It makes life easier. And I’m not going to lie and say I know what it’s like to struggle. I don’t. I was born into a wealthy family. But there are different challenges.”

“Like what?”

“Like, I’m not fucking telling you because no matter how important I think they are, to someone struggling to eat or house themselves or pay for their dying loved one’s medical bills, I’d just sound like an asshole.”

Lily let her eyes drift across the room as she processed that. Then dropped her head to his chest. She respected his answer. It was honest, even if she didn’t really like it.

“We are very different.”

“Yet here we are,” Aidan said.

They sat staring out at the dark Hawaiian sky for a long while until Lily wriggled off his knee.

She’d lived with her dad’s illness for over a year now. He was right. It was probably one of those bumps in the road and he’d be fine.

Lily wanted to be here for Emma as her bridesmaid. She knew it would be her one and only wedding. The two were so madly in love.

Plus, in just a few days, she would be home.

“I have to pack,” Lily said. “Maybe you should head off and do the same.”

“Firstly, no. And secondly, why? Are you going home?” he asked.

“We’re flying to Maui tomorrow, remember?” Lily said.

“Can’t you do it in the morning?” Aidan asked.

“No, it will take me at least half an hour.”

Aidan laughed at her.

“Lily, how much stuff did you bring?” Aidan stood and walked into the bedroom, following her. When she opened the cupboard, he turned to her. “It looks like you’ve moved in.”

She shrugged. “I like variety. Plus, I flew first class so figured I’d just bring all the things I love.”

“Okay, peaches, let’s get all this shit into your suitcases and then I have plans for you in the shower.”

And he did.

For much longer than she would have let him if they’d been back home. God knows what the power bill would be after the hour-long sexual marathon.

Lily glanced at her fingers now as she lay in his arms, surprised they weren’t still wrinkly.

As for Aidan teaching her more sexy stuff, Lily glanced at his handsome morning face and, knowing they were halfway through their vacation, she should protect her heart.

Opening up to him last night about her dad had been very intimate. She liked the way it felt when he held her and wiped away her tears.

Way too much.
