But then she’d see a friend on social media traveling to a faraway place, or they’d met an Australian man and were giving birth to their first child. One girl from her high school had won bronze in the damn Olympics.

If that wasn’t magic, then wow.

Others had created companies and their careers were flying.

It was easy to make excuses, but all of them had come from the South Side of Chicago just like her.

Heck, even her best friend Emma had become a bestselling author and was marrying a billionaire.

Lily was still just Lily.

She sighed, walked over to the bed, and flopped down, staring at the ceiling. The only difference she could see between her and everyone else was the choices and actions they took each day.

It wasn’t magic.

Although maybe therewasa slither of luck involved.

But it couldn’t show up if you just kept doing the same thing every day. Like she was.

Aidan was right.

She could’ve changed jobs. She could’ve signed up for the teacher’s training and invested in her future. It would’ve meant she didn’t have the money to help her family and because of that, Lily had no regrets.

She didn’t know how much longer her dad had and both she and her mom were as prepared as they could for the day when it came.

It would be sooner rather than later.

He didn’t have years.

It might be months.

So perhaps there was something serendipitous about this vacation. Perhaps Andrew Dufort had just given her a gift. Delivered harshly, yes, but it was giving her the motivation to really reach for her dreams.

One day—and she was in no hurry—she would pursue her dreams and become a teacher. And dammit, she was going to go to Paris and sip coffee in a café while watching the beautiful French women in their Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld dresses go about their fabulous French lives.

So fuck Andrew Dufort and fuck Aidan for not standing up for her, but she was pretty sure they had both done her a favor and one day she would thank them.

Just not this weekend.

And not to their face.

Lily pushed off the bed and had just walked toward the bathroom when she heard a knock at the door.

“Lily,” Aidan called out in a loud hush.

“Go away,” she replied, standing in the doorway of the bathroom, which was only a few feet from her door.

“Open the door,” he ordered.

She groaned.

She had known he would come to her eventually, whether it was tonight or tomorrow. He was so bossy there was no point in ignoring him.

Lily whipped open the door and put one hand on her hip, the other hand she used to wave out in front of her.

“Well, come in. Say what you have to say.” She sighed.

Wow. Maybe she did have a little sass in her.
