What does it matter what I know? I’ll be handing her back to her family, then heading home to Texas when we get to the States.

But I do want to know, and the more I listen to her talking, the more I sense she’s leaving out a piece of the puzzle. The secret I know she’s hiding.

I run a few scenarios through my head and come up blank.

“Let’s go out back,” Javier says, wiping his mouth, and snapping me from my distraction.

Isabelle turns her head as I move my chair. The relaxed impression she is giving everyone vanishes for a split second.

I place my hand on her leg. “I’ll just be through there.”

Javier’s sister glares at me then glances between us before standing to clear some dishes.

The hairs on the back of my neck lift.

I glance at Javier and lift my brow in question. He waves her off like she’s just a nuisance. “My sister.”

“Stay right here,” I tell Isabelle, running my hand over her hair.

“Okay,” she says, then forces her smile back when she’s handed another plate of food.

I push through the curtain where a door once was and sit on one of the ripped armchairs while Javier goes behind his desk.

He gets straight to the point. “Ten million.”

“Correct.”

“You want my firstborn? You are too late. She left home already.”

Despite the situation, I smile.

“I want you to do something for me. It’s dangerous, though I chose you because I believe you are a good man and will want to help.”

“You are public enemy number one. If I help you, I’m a dead man,” Javier says.

“You will be a rich man and can move your family wherever you want,” I challenge.

His brows slowly lift, and he studies me as if seeing me for the first time. I will never tell him my true identity. I will, however, share enough to let him know I’m not someone to fuck with.

“Who are you?” Javier asks.

“You know me as one of Pablo’s top-ranking men. Don’t think what I tell you next means I have not done everything necessary to earn that rank. I have and did. But I’m also a trained U.S. military officer. That’s all you need to know.”

“Traidor.” He curses, shaking his head and leaning back in his chair disgusted.

I lean forward and growl. “Fuck off, Javier. You telling me you’ve never taken a slice off the top? Should I drop an anonymous text to Jose or Diego?”

He stands and paces. I give him a few minutes to let that threat sink in while he curses away in Spanish.

“What do you want from me?” he finally asks.

“It’s simple.”It’s not.“All you need to do is go to Sinaloa tonight and wait by the warehouse address I give you. When a shipping container is delivered, drive away and phone me. That’s it.”

“That’s it?”

Technically, yes, but it might not be delivered there, so I’ll need him to get his hands dirty.

“It might take a day or two. I don’t know,” I say honestly. “Although you must stay hidden and keep your eyes on the warehouse constantly. They will move fast once it arrives, so I need to know immediately.”
