If it’s delivered to the warehouse.

Otherwise, I will have to determine how we get the information about where they have diverted it. Then I can send the details to my contact, who takes care of the rest and gets these people back home.

“If I’m caught, I’m dead. And so is my family.” He waves his arm out.

Javier is a drug trafficker. His nose is as dirty as they come. It might appeal to him if I told him there were women and children, but I don’t know enough to be sure.

And it’s a risk I’m not willing to take.

No cartel member, foot soldier or not, can be trusted. He’d as soon ring another gang and intercept it, making more money.

The less information he has, the better.

Plus, if he was worried about his family, he’d get a desk job. So, I’m not buying that bullshit.

There are different ways of doing business in the cartel and after six years, I speak the language well. And I’m not talking about Spanish.

“If you don’t help me, I will kill them,” I reply, casually lifting my ankle onto my knee. Then I lift my shoulder. “And no ten million pesos.”

Javier stills and looks over at me with fury in his eyes.

“You come into my home and threaten me? You eat at my table and threaten to kill my family?”

I drop my leg and lean on my knees as my voice drops an octave. “Do the job, and no one gets hurt. The decision is yours.”

He hisses at me, and we both know he doesn’t have one. He will do it to protect his family and because he wants the money. This has just been a game. And to ensure he does as I’ve asked, I’ve decided Isabelle and I are not going anywhere tonight.

Javier will be.

“The sooner you leave, the faster you arrive.” I point out, sitting back in my chair.

“Mother fucker.” He curses once more, then stands and waves his hand at me. “Show me the money.”

Fair enough.

I lean back and reach down into the backpack. Unzipping it, I start pulling out the peso bricks. I stop at three hundred thousand. That’s already more than he’s seen in his life.

Where did I get it? That doesn’t matter. I have it and I’m using it to help people.

“The rest is in there,” I say, then put them away. I’m not giving him a singlepesoyet. With money comes power. I need him to be powerless and compliant.

Javier sighs and rubs the back of his neck, pacing some more. “Hide, watch, ring you. That’s it?”

“Si.” I zip up the bag and lean back in the seat. “Two days. No more. Send me photographic proof, then ring me, and you can get straight in the car and drive home.”

“Okay, okay. Ten million,” he mutters.

I know exactly what he’s doing. He’s looking for a cunning way around this to cheat me out of the money. I wasn’t born yesterday and I’m running out of patience. Every second we remain in Mexico is a risk to Isabelle.

I know she will be upset when I tell her, but I have to help everyone. For Chloe. For all of those before her.

“We’ll stay here until you return,” I say, standing as his head snaps around. I hold up my hand. “That’s the deal. I don’t trust you, Javier. I know you love your family and that you need this money. Other than that, I’d shoot your brains out, knowing you’d double-cross me.”

“Mierda,” he curses, his eyes dark.

When he starts to cross the room, I call out to him.

“Touch that shotgun or make a single move, and I will kill you, and any of the women out there, without a single thought.”
