He thinks I would.

Javier doesn’t know what is in the shipment. For all he knows, or cares, it's full of drugs, weapons, or humans. He thinks I’m double-crossing Pablo and about to make billions ofpesos, so the threat is palpable and real.

He nods and pushes through the curtain.

I follow.

The sounds of cheerful chatter and food dishes clattering return, and I lean against the doorjamb as he speaks in Spanish, telling Ana he must leave for a few days.

She shoots me a questioning stare and it isn’t happy.

Then he mentions the money and her eyes widen. Momentarily. Then they narrow.

They begin to argue, and Isabelle starts to look uncomfortable, so I push away from the door and walk to her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

“We’ll stay with you until he returns,” I tell the women as I look them both in the eye. “You will have my protection during that time.”

No one in this room is stupid enough to believe that. I can see it on their faces. It’s more of a friendly hostage situation. However, they’re not stupid enough to disagree, either. They know who I am.

Or rather, who they think I am.

Only Isabelle is ignorant, thankfully, of the realities of the cartel and what they do.

Javier wraps his arms around Ana when she shakes her head. “I will go.” He glances at me, then back to his wife, and says in Spanish, “They can stay in Luna’s old room. Make them a bed.”

I watch him grab his jacket off a hook and then a set of keys. The two sisters are blathering on as he shoots me one last dark expression, then walks out the door.

Isabelle turns to look at me. “What is going on?”

I have some explaining to do.
