‘Honestly, the number one weirdest is the fact that she’s my patient.’

‘ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh’

I sigh. I was afraid of this. I stare at my phone for a minute. It takes a while before she responds.

‘Delete that last one. I take it back. Not weird at all. You live in a small community. You provide a necessary service. Of course your paths collide professionally. If you were a barista, you’d make her coffee. If you were a policeman, you’d ticket her for speeding. It’s not at all strange that she lives on campus and you are her medical provider.’

It’s a nice try, but maybe my sister doth protest too much.

‘Okay. I’ll pretend I believe you and choose not to feel awkward. How’s that?’

‘Ideal. Okay, about the age thing.’

‘I believe we’ve established her majority. Can we move on?’

‘Can you? Because I can.’

‘Tell you what. The fact that I could drive when she started kindergarten? I’ll ignore it if you will.’

‘Gray, that fact would have been much easier to ignore if you hadn’t just mentioned it.’

I wait a few seconds without typing anything, and she comes back.

‘All right. No big deal. It’s just numbers. Age doesn’t mean anything.’

‘Easy for you to say, you’re older than Ethan.’

‘I’m three months older than Ethan, and yeah, it’s easy for me to say. But really, is the age thing a worry?’

I take a few seconds to think about it. She’s not a child. Even when I first met Sage, she was a very mature eighteen—and that was years ago.

‘No. Not a worry for me.’I feel my shoulders relax as I send the message. Okay. Good.

Lana responds fast.

‘Not for me, either, then. Also, that hair. Is it as amazing as it looks?’

‘Are you still stalking her?’

‘Stalking implies ill intent. My intent is perfectly harmless.’

‘Stop looking at pictures of my ** on the internet.’

‘Your **? What were you going to say?’

How do I get out of this now? I was going to say girlfriend, obviously. But girlfriend is already such a childish word (although it’s arguably better than boyfriend, for obvious reasons), and to add it to the conversation about how I’m not weirded out by her age? It’s not a point in favor, is what I’m saying. Also, she’s not my girlfriend.

Yet.

‘Sage.’

‘MY SAGE?’

‘She’s not my Sage. Each * represents a date. She’s my two-times date.’

‘Oh, dude. You are in deep.’

‘Two dates is deep?’
