Honestly, I should be used to having guards around since I’ve had them most of my life growing up, but I convinced my father to drop them during late high school and have gone without one ever since. Besides, my friends who hung around me were as good as any guard, and at least they were around my age and were my friends.

“Alright, thank you.” I was more than willing to take any slack he was willing to give me.

“Oh, a few people have been blowing up your phone since an hour ago.” Arseny spoke up after a moment of silence, fishing out a phone from his pocket. “Asshole 1, Asshole 2, and Best Bitch. Interesting people you got.” He teased me with a snicker as I snatched my phone from him with a soft glare. “Wonder what my name in your phone is gonna be.”

“It’s going to be Asshole 3 if you don’t shut up.” I grumbled as I watched my phone light up with another call.

“Go on, answer it, on speakerphone,” Nikolai said in a way as if he gave me permission to answer my own calls. “Whatever you say to them you can say to us.”

As much as I wanted to argue with him, I had to earn their trust, show them I could be trusted. So, scowling softly, I answered the call. “What?” I answered bluntly in an unamused voice.

“Oh my god, finally! We thought we were going to have to fish for your body at the bottom of the Garth River at this rate! Hold on, let me patch in Hanna, she’s been trying to get ahold of you too. I already got Bao here with me, so give me a moment.” The familiar voice of my brother soothed me a bit. At least I’ve got some close people out there who cared about me enough.

Soon, a soft beep could be heard as my other friend joined in on the call. “She’s alive! Man, getting hitched without inviting us? Rude. But seriously, it’s good to hear your voice Ange. You have no idea how worried I was last night. Sorry you have to be in this situation. If we’d figured out what she was trying to do sooner, then we could have warned you and come up with some plan. Guess we’re just getting a little too careless with her.” A woman’s voice could be heard on the other line now.

“Oh please, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have had any problem if she knew who she was going to marry anyways. Hey, at least now you get your handsome hunk. Tell me, is his ass as nice as the pictures we saw?” Greg teased with a snicker, making my face pale with embarrassment.

“Oh my god shut the fuck up Greg.” I wanted nothing more than to chuck my phone into oblivion and lock myself in a closet to hide my embarrassment and from everyone who snickered and smirked at me teasingly. Even my own husband seemed to be enjoying it a bit too much.

“What? You never shut up about him for weeks! ‘Oh, maybe I should have pretended he needed CPR and given him mouth to mouth, bet he would have tasted manly as fuck.’ Or what was the other thing you said uhhhh...” I could hear Greg drag on a little.

Fucking kill me right now God, and save me from this embarrassment!

Groaning, I started to sink down to the ground, but I didn’t get far before a pair of strong hands grabbed me and pulled me backwards. Looking back, I could see Nikolai’s smirking face, making my blood rush more with embarrassment and lustful want when I realized he pulled me into his lap, giving me a good opportunity to feel what he had going on under his pants.

“Oh! Wasn’t it something about cutting his pants off?” My other friend, Bao, chimed in.

“Oh yeah! Should have pretended that you needed a better look to shred through those pants so that you could—”

“Shut the fuck up! Moving on!” I didn’t let Greg finish his sentence because I was damn sure I would never be able to face any of them in this room ever again if he did.

“Oh no, we’re not moving on from this girly. You go from single to being married to one of California’s hottest damn bachelors overnight! Who you were practically drooling over when we were doing research. Man, why can’t I get myself a hot man like that? Maybe I should start dragging people out of cars too.” I could hear the pout and perfectly picture it on Hanna’s face.

“Oh please, you already do pull people out of cars, the only difference is you beat the shit out of them while little miss sexy nurse over here saves them.” Bao laughed.

“Well, I never get anyone hot to drag out, they’re all slimeballs that deserve it.” Hanna grumbled.

“Considering how they’re your targets, when are they ever going to be hot and good enough for you? I mean, do you really want to go out with any of the people I send you after girl?” I groaned, pinching the bridge of my nose.

“I mean, you could try to put in a good word for me with one of your new brothers in laws, yeah? I mean, come on, help a sister out girl. You know how I like ‘em.” Hanna snickered.

“Oh my God kill me now. I’m going to go crawl into The Catacombs and die after this call. Just what the fuck do you guys want? Why the hell are you calling? And don’t say it’s to check up on me and mister handsome.” Oh god, did I really say that last part out loud? I mean, I have to keep things up so they don’t think something is up. But fuck me for my slip up.

“Well, half of it is us wanting to know that you’re alive and well. Also, how mister handsome is, because, well, come on, who would have thought that you’d be the first of us to get married, much less to one of the hottest men in the state? The heavens really answered your damn prayers girl.” Bao laughed softly, making me groan internally.

“In all seriousness though, how are you? I mean, a forced marriage with a Bratva member? The head, nonetheless. That bitch really out did herself this time with this stunt of hers. What is she even hoping to achieve with this? We all know she’s been eyeing their territory for a while, so a peace treaty doesn’t make any sense.” Greg’s tone took a serious edge to it, changing the mood of everyone on the call and in the room.

Sighing, I shook my head softly while running a hand through my long locks. “I don’t know, I really don’t. She has something planned though, and I don’t like the feeling I’m getting. That bitch aside, I’m fine, really, just adjusting. Nikolai isn’t that bad, so far.” I’ve only interacted with him for not even an hour before knocking out in the car last night, and not like I’ve done much before the phone call either.

“Have you consummated the marriage yet?” Hanna’s voice had an edge to it, and I knew she had to be smirking right now.

“Oh please, why even put it nicely? Did you fuck the dude yet?” Bao laughed loudly, followed by a loud smack, probably from Greg.

“Come on girl! I need to know the deets! You know how boring my bed has been of late! I need some juicy excitement! Come on, spill the beans! Was he good? Oh, who am I kidding, a man like him is probably amazing. How big was he?” Hanna giggled, sounding a little too interested in my nonexistent sex life with Nikolai—well, nonexistent for now.

“Stroke his ego more, why don’t you.” I grumbled, hiding my face in my hand, not wanting to face Nikolai or his brothers right now who were a little too closely gathered around me.

“Nah, stroking him is your job girl.” Hanna laughed, making me groan more in embarrassment.
