CHAPTER 11

Angel

Ifeel like I shouldjust chop my hand off and pass it around to my coworkers to save my hand from all the yanking as they admired my ring. It was a cute platinum ring with a 2.0 carat heart shaped diamond as the center and tapering round diamonds on either side of it. I wanted an encrusted band, but Nikolai demanded I get something more because no wife of his was going to walk around with a plain old sparkly band.

Even though he said I had control over what ring I wanted, he butted in too much. If it were up to him, I would have left the place with the hugest and flashiest ring they had there. Well, at least he wasn’t too pushy once he realized it wasn’t really my style. Still, he wanted some nice rocks on the ring.

“How the hell did you get hitched on your two days off?!” One of my coworkers asked as she admired the ring.

“You’d never believe it.” I half joked with a snort.

Oh, my evil stepmother drugged me and married me off to the head of the bratva using my father as a threat, nothing fancy.

Well, it was definitely going to be an interesting story for the kids.

Wait, kids? Did I want kids with Nikolai?

“Who did you marry girl? Were you even dating anyone?” Another one questioned after yanking my hand in their direction.

“It was a big spur of the moment thing. I knew him through my father’s business with him.” It wasn’t a total lie. We did meet because of our mafia businesses.

“Who is he? Name girl, name, we need a name to stalk.” Another pushed with a laugh.

“There she is!” A somewhat familiar voice broke our little group huddle. It wasn’t long until I felt an arm slung around my shoulders. “There’s my favorite sister-in-law.”

“Alexei, I’m your only sister-in-law.” I replied with a roll of my eyes while shrugging his arm off.

I still had trouble telling the twins apart whenever they were together at the house, but there was only one who was a doctor.

“Sister-in-law?! You’re married to one of Dr. Volkov’s brothers!? Oh my gosh, which one!?” Now they were all ganging up on me again.

“Does it matter which one? They’re all drop dead gorgeous and successful as hell. I’m surprised our little one here snagged one.” One of the older nurses chuckled and patted me on the shoulder.

“Dr. Volkov, to what do we owe the pleasure of your ED visit?” I directed the attention back to him, changing the subject so I could avoid being grilled for answers I didn’t know how to give yet.

“Oh, I’m on my first break of the day and thought I’d drop down and pay ya a visit. Also, wanted to ask if you wanted a coffee or anything from the café, my treat of course.” Alexei replied with his usual friendly grin.

Out of all the brothers, the twins seem to be the least weighed down. I could still see their playful youth and outwardly friendly behavior. Everyone else was friendly, but just one look and you could tell their shoulders were burdened in a way.

“You mean Nikolai’s treat? Considering how most of your money is from him still.” I joked with a chuckle.

Residency didn’t pay much, and Alexei didn’t have a vast fortune from the family business because he rarely dipped his toes in it. All his brothers pitched in though, always tossing quite a few chunks into his bank account for him to spend as he pleased.

“Even if you paid it’d still be on Nikolai considering how you have access to his funds now.” Alexei shot back.

“You’re hitched to Nikolai?! Girl, I knew you like ‘em older but damn!” My coworker piped up, smacking me on the arm.

“He’s notthatmuch older than me.” It never occurred to me to ask for his age this whole time, though I assumed he was maybe thirty’s or early thirty’s based on his appearance. So, just a few years older than me? Maybe? Honestly, I sucked at age judging any ethnicity beside Asian.

“He’s thirty-nine, going on forty in a few months.” Alexei answered.

Oh shit. That’s about a fifteen year age gap between me and him then. Surprisingly I didn’t find it off putting. Actually, the fact of it made it a little more fun. He was a well-seasoned man who knew what he was doing. No doubt he’d know all the ways to my body without much guidance. I always did try to pine for older men because I wanted a man in bed, not an inexperienced boy. That and the hope an older man was actually mature and not entirely stupid.

With a smirk, my coworker leaned in. “Oh? Guess you got a new da—”

Not letting her finish her sentence, I lightly smacked her with a chart. “Okay, that’s enough out of you missy, you’ve got a patient in bed five to tend to.” I shooed her off along with the others to have some peace to myself before shit would hit the fan.

“Oh,” Alexei had an ‘ah-ha’ moment as if he remembered something. I watched as he fished around his pockets, trying to find something. “Here,” he held out a black metal looking card to me, “Your new credit card. It came after you left this morning.”
