“I can keep you here, and I will. How long depends on how quickly the information you gave me pans out. As for whether you’ll leave here unscathed or alive depends on that information as well. I won’t touch your family, I’m not inhuman.” Also, I quite liked his wife and daughter, they were the sweetest people alive. More importantly, they were innocent victims in this shit show.

“You’ll kill me?” There was terror in his eyes again as he looked at me brokenly.

“No, I’d break your bones, cut a few tendons, anything and everything in the books besides end your life. I mean, you’ve known me for twenty-four years doc, you know that I’m no killer.” The small handful of lives I have taken were justifiable or accidents. I’ve never intentionally killed anyone for the sake of it, nor have I ever had the inclination to. Of course, there was one exception, possibly.

“I mean, I’m no killer, but I can’t say the same for my husband.” Nikolai had no qualms about snuffing out a life. I’ve seen it first-hand.

“B-but you wouldn’t let him kill me, right? I gave you what I know. I promise it’s all good and legit!” It’s hard to trust a desperate man, but I have no doubts his information was good. Still, I couldn’t let him go without hard evidence that his information was solid. I still have a reputation to uphold.

With a cruel smirk, I pulled back and tossed the knife back onto the table. “That is yet to be determined, doc. You will remain here under lock and key until further notice. No harm will come to you, for now. And you have my word that no harm will come to your wife or daughter, they will be safe and unharmed.” His protests faded into the background as I took my leave with Nikolai.

“Well, that was uneventful.” Nikolai muttered as the two of us made our way out of the compound.

“Sadly. I was hoping for more of a fight from him. Oh well.” I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get to have a little fun with prying the information out of him.

Sighing, I wrapped my arms around one of his, leaning against him a bit as we continued to walk, “We’re going to need to talk to our little business partner sooner than later, don’t you think so,anh?”

“I’m starting to regret going into business with him more and more every time his name comes up.” Nikolai groaned with a slight roll of his eyes. “I don’t particularly like protecting snakes. The only thing they do is bite you when you aren’t looking.”

Even the best get played sometimes, it was an inevitable evil of the business. Sometimes the chances panned out, sometimes they were train wrecks.

Best we could do right now is prevent the impending train wreck with Ivan.

CHAPTER 29

Nikolai

“Kolyenka? It’s 3 AM, come back to bed.” I couldn’t help turning my head towards the sweet and tired voice of Angel who stood at the doorway of my office.

Looking over at my phone, I could see she was right. “Govno. Sorry, I guess I lost track of time.” Again. The past few days have been a headache and a half. It always was around collection time.

Sighing softly with an apologetic smile, I looked up at her before replying, “Just go back to bed, lisichka. I’ll be there in a bit.” Hopefully a bit won’t stretch past an hour, but I didn’t want to leave things hanging before calling it a night.

Guess Angel wasn’t having any of it tonight though. The soft pitter patter of her feet floated across the room until she was between me and my desk, her hand nearly slamming the laptop shut as she leaned against the desk. “Bed. Now.” She demanded with a pout, making me chuckle.

“Is that how you ask for something, lisichka? I am not opposed to giving your backside another beating tonight.” I wouldn’t make good on that threat for tonight though, seeing how tired she was right now added with the fact she had a shift in a few hours.
