“Aww, you were worried about me, how sweet.” I teased playfully with a grin in his direction. “I might have been screwed if these two knew what they were doing or if they had it more planned or something. They weren’t expecting me to be home it seems like, so I caught them by surprise. Helps that they thought I was just the sweet and stupid wife. I honestly thought it was a ploy for them to get me to turn my back so they’d put a bullet through me.”

“Stanley, Tony, what the fuck is going on?” Lev demanded with a scowl as he approached them like a predator stalking up to its injured prey. His hands unbutton the sleeves of his shirt with each step. Then he pushed the sleeves up above his elbows.

“They didn’t hurt you did they?” Lev asked me after turning his head in my direction.

“No. Are Benjamin and Tim okay?” I would hate to think of something bad to happen to those two. Even if it was part of their job description, they still had lives of their own. I’ve also grown somewhat fond of the two after it was clear I couldn’t shake them no matter how much I tried. They were also good company on occasion when I had no one else around to entertain my mind.

“Yeah, they’ll be fine. Alexei is on his way with another doctor to tend to their injuries. These two newbies blindsided them with a few others. Seems like we’ll have to pick through our guards to weed out the bad apples after we’re done with these two.” Lev replied before punching Tony in the stomach, making him double over and cough. “What were you after in here?” He questioned the man, grabbing him by the hair and forcing his head back.

“You don’t want to wait for Kolya to come back before we start turning them into punching bags and pin cushions?” Nikolai probably wouldn’t care too much as long as we got the needed answers, but I also knew he liked to personally deal with problems close to home. Well, not like we’d kill them by the time he gets here, hopefully. I could vouch for myself, but Lev was a different story.

“We’re not going to say anything, so might as well kill us.” Stanley spoke up in a shaky voice. Clearly he was scared by how his leg twitched and how his eyes darted around the room like a ping pong ball.

“Killing you would be too easy. I mean, I could do it right now with one well-placed bullet, but where’s the fun in that? But there are two of you, and we just need one for answers.” Slowly, I bounce the loaded gun back and forth between Tony and Stanley, an attempt to shake them up. If we could find who was the weaker one between the two then we’d save a lot of time and energy. “Also, killing you would be giving you what you want.” Both the men were eyeing the gun nervously, twitching and jumping whenever the gun aimed at them.

“God damnit, just shoot us you crazy bitch!” Tony shouted impatiently.

A pained grunt left Tony when Lev punched him, “Don’t be talking to her like that. Did your mother not teach you manners?” Lev scowled, throwing Tony’s head at Stanley’s, causing a soft thudding of heads to sound through the room.

As fun as it was to watch them squirm helplessly in terror, I couldn’t continue forever, unfortunately. “You.” My gun landed squarely on Tony who froze up at the end of the muzzle. “Talk. Every minute you waste will be a bullet in a toe. Any lie will be a bullet in the toe. And yes, omission counts as lying too.”

To make my demand clear, and to scare the poor man some, I aimed the gun at his feet and fired a shot next to his shoe. “I’ll move onto your little buddy’s toes after all ten of yours are done for, and I’ve got enough rounds in both guns to go for all twenty little piggies.”

“Wait! Why do you have to shoot mine if you’re going to question him? He’s not going to care about my toes!” Stanley shouted in a panic as he struggled to get away from Tony, but there wasn’t much length to the rope between them to put much distance.

“Well, then I guess you better start convincing your buddy to talk or talk yourself before his toes are gone.” Shifting my aim, I fired another shot into the floor, this time next to Stanley’s foot. “You’re both lucky I am feeling nice today, otherwise I’d forgo the gun and use anything stab-able for your shitty feet, and that can range anywhere from knives to the pens on the desk, depending on how generous I am feeling.” Bullets destroyed too much in their path, which meant less landscape to work with.

Well, if I ever got tired of nursing, I could always become a not so legal interrogator. But on second thought, I liked helping people too much. Torture gets so boring after a small while. Ironically, I didn’t like seeing people suffer. Very ironic given my threats just now, but this was part of the job of being Nikolai’s bride I had placed upon myself. He was a formidable man, and I wanted to show the world I was just as formidable to be standing hand and hand next to him.

Silence filled the room, neither man moving their lips like I wanted.

Shame.

BANG!

It took a second for everything to sink in after I fired the bullet into Tony’s foot. “Motherfucker! She actually shot me!” Tony screamed, jerking his bleeding foot any which way.

Placing a hand over my heart, I feigned hurt with a fake expression of disbelief. “What? Did you think I was kidding? I am offended that you would think I wasn’t serious.” Seldom were my threats empty in situations like this, and Tony learned things the hard way. Hopefully Stanley will see this example and learn from it before it’s his turn.

Smirking, I held up the wrist with my watch on it and waved it tauntingly at Tony. “Tick tock Tony, you got fifteen more seconds before it’s another full minute, and you know what that means.”

The seconds ticked by in my head as I continued to stare down Tony who tried to keep a brave face with me. The tough guy bravado his quivering body tried to maintain was almost laughable. Once the next minute was up, I took aim again. He still had his shoes on, so I could only assume the spot right next to the first bleeding hole would be his second toe.

Another bang rang out after I pulled the trigger, and another scream from Tony followed suit. Then another stagnant pause before a third shot filled the room. Tony wasn’t going to talk, I had already figured as much. He was merely target practice and a means to spook my intended target.

Five minutes passed by in a blink of an eye—and a bloody foot later. “Down one foot already Tony. I gotta give you props for not letting the shock get to you yet.” Then, my eyes fell over to my intended prey. “You see how fast five minutes go by Stanley? Soon it’ll be you before you know it. I mean, look,” I paused briefly to pull the trigger, letting out another shot, “Only four more toes to go before you now.”

Tony wasn’t the weaker one of the two, no, it was Stanley. I had to shake Stanley up enough to get his lips loose. Tony could take the beating, he was the tough guy of the two, which was why I picked on him. Sometimes fear and anticipation worked a lot better than pain when it came to prying information out of people. Seeing what happened to Tony and knowing he would be next should be enough to spur Stanley—at least that was my hope.

BANG!

“Three.” A twisted smirk pulled at my lips after firing another shot. Dragging it out would hopefully build that fear and anxiety.

The sound of scuffling shoes against hardwood came to a halt at the door. “Angel!” Nikolai’s shoulders relaxed the moment he laid eyes on me. The gun in his hand lowered as he entered the room, running a hand down the lower part of his face. “I thought you got shot.” The flash of concern and fear flashed in his blue eyes when he looked at me.

“Don’t worry, I’m untouched.” I assured him with a soft smile before turning my attention back to Tony and giving his remaining foot another shot. “Two. Almost your turn, Stanley.” I couldn’t help myself from giving an unhinged chuckle for effect, nearly chuckling with purpose when I saw how Stanley shook in his seat. “One.” I couldn’t help the dark rasp of my voice as I pulled the trigger again.

“They wanted locations!” Stanley shouted over the sounds of Tony’s screams.
