“I do not appreciate your disrespect towards my wife, Lady Qing. Say your piece and leave or I will let my wife handle you to her discretion.” At least Nikolai had my back, and I was surprised to see him speak up for me rather than stay out of this whole mess.

“You need to control her.” Now she was just being rude by ignoring me and trying to bypass my authority with my husband.

I watched Nikolai’s chest rise and fall with his deep breaths. I don’t know if my stepmother could see it from a slight distance, but I could see the tension in Nikolai’s face as his jaw clenched and his eyebrows furrowed together slightly. “My wife is my equal, I do not need to control her. I do not appreciate you disrespecting her in her own home thatIprovided for her. This is your final warning to say your piece and leave, or else.”

Smiling gratefully, I reached out and slipped my hand into his, giving it a small squeeze to show my gratitude.

Replacing my smile with flat expression, I turned my attention back to my stepmother, “We’ve been overly generous with you, so speak and leave. I am not going to tell you another time.” Hell, I’ll personally grab her by the scruff of her neck and chuck her out the door myself.

“You can read it all yourself and figure it out. I am going to be signing papers at 7 PM later. Whether you are there or not is up to you.” With a haughty smile, she left as if she’d won, pissing me off immensely.

“Remind me to never let our kids get married, I can’t imagine playing nice with in-laws who are absolute assholes.” Nikolai joked dryly with a scoffing chuckle before leaning down and kissing the top of my head.

“This bitch better be lying out of her bleeding ass.” I grumbled, leaning down and picking up the scattered papers.

Gritting my teeth, I pulled my phone out after flipping through the papers. “I’ll be a moment.” I muttered to Nikolai with a quick kiss, taking off to the office afterwards as the phone continued to ring.

Much to my relief after a good hour or so on the phone with the lawyer, my father was safe from my stepmother’s claws. Although the documents she produced were legit, they were superseded by my father’s own written and videotaped documents that were literally days before he fell into a coma.

Well, my stepmother was definitely going to be in shock when she showed up at the hospital and got all of this slapped in her face. If only I could be there to smile smugly. Too bad I have to prepare for the next day with everyone else. Not counting today, we had one more day until the event. So, I’ll let the lawyer handle my stepmother later.

CHAPTER 40

Nikolai

“No caffeine today?”I was prepared for the struggle which happened nearly every morning with Angel, but not today, shockingly.

Grumpily, and tiredly, she let out a sigh with a pout. “No, I need to cut down the caffeine and nearly all together for a while until my health decides to figure itself out. I’ll still eat, don’t worry, you won’t have to bribe me with my caffeine, I’ll be good.” Usually I’d call bullshit, knowing how much she fought me on eating an actual breakfast nearly every day, but the seriousness in her voice told me otherwise.

Setting the coffee mug down by the sink, I walked over to her and pulled her into my arms. “Are you sure you’re fine to pick up a shift like this? The event is tomorrow, are you sure you need this added stress?” Relaxing before a big assignment or mission sounded ideal, so I was very surprised when Angel told me she picked up a shift last minute.

Everything was all prepared and ready to go for tomorrow’s event. The vans were packed with the equipment needed, our main plans and backup plans were all sorted and solid; there was nothing else to do but to wait for tomorrow night to come. So, I wasn’t wanting to keep her around for anything last minute regarding tomorrow, just worried about her doing too much.

“It’s just a half shift to keep my mind off of everything. Trust me, if I sit around the house, the only thing that’s gonna happen is that I’m gonna stress myself out more about tomorrow. Also, if I stay around and stress around too much, you might fuck me senseless to where I’m sleeping most of the day away, which would piss me off later because you know how much I hate wasting a day away sleeping or doing nothing too productive.” She replied with a long groan and roll of her eyes.

Chuckling softly, I shook my head at her before leaning down and kissing her softly. “You are the strangest woman I’ve ever met. I’ve never met or been with anyone who has ever complained about being fucked too much.” To be fair, it was a form of distraction I used too often with her.
