Let him have car trouble down the road—serves his ass right for fucking around with my girl.

Well, notmygirl.

Just the girl I’m sleeping with.

Whatever.

“I think you broke his nose.” Gunner’s voice grabbed my attention as he dropped his arm. “He seems like the kind of guy who might sue, too.”

“Nah, his ego is too big for that.” I let out a sigh, running my fingers along the stubble on my jaw. “I just don’t know what she was thinking, bringing him here.”

“I don’t think that’s how it worked. She didn’t seem happy to see the asshole at all. In fact, she spent most of it trying to get it through his thick skull that she was fine with things being over with him. I take it they had one of those weird relationships.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I turned to him.

“You know, like they’re not together, but he still fucks around with her to keep her there as an option.”

“Brutal.”

“Tell me about it,” he grimaced, and I could see on his face he had some experience with it—but I didn’t ask.

I didn’t fucking care.

I just needed to get to Hannah.

“You’re gonna have to call for a ride.” I headed to the bike, parked about ten feet away. “Call Bear or something.”

“You’re shitting me, right? Like you’re not seriously going to leave me behind?”

“You’re not seriously thinking you’re gonna be riding on the back of my bike?” I laughed, shaking my head. “The only men I let ride in the bitch seat aremembers.”

“Now who’s being brutal.” Gunner’s shoulders slumped. “Like you’ve got me out here doing the weirdest shit, watching over some girl that you can’t decide if you love her or hate her.”

“It doesn’t matter what I ask you to do, prospect.” I ignored the look on his face since Gunner and I had been friends for years. I pulled out my black gloves from my pocket, pulling them onto my hands. “You’ll get there soon, Gunner.”

His eyes brightened. “You think?”

“Yeah, but that’s up to Tip when that happens. You know I’ll vote you in. You’ve been working to get in for how long now? Like a year?”

“Something like that,” he grunted, running his hands through his light hair. “It feels like it’s been a lifetime of playing slave for all you assholes.”

I shook my head. “I remember those days.”

“Yeah, right. I guess since I’m staying, I’ll go back inside and wait—maybe actually eat some food this time. I didn’t order anything before. Hannah threatened to leave more times than I can count on one hand.”

“Empty threats.”

“Hardly. I think she’s a tough one.”

My stomach flipped, her blue eyes lighting up in my mind. “Yeah, she is.” I eyed Gunner as he gave me an amused grin. “What?”

“I just think you should be honest with yourself—and a little nicer to her. You might find she’s actually a pleasant person.”

“I like her spicy.”

Gunner opened his mouth to say something, but the piercing sound of a gunshot cut him off, and the whir of a bullet buzzedrightbeside my head.

“What the fuck!” Gunner shouted, lunging toward me and dragging me straight to the ground behind a maroon car that was parked in front of the café. “Where did that come from?”
