But no one did.

“I don’t know why you’re worried about him going anywhere alone.”

“Where’s he going then?” I spun to Gunner, who looked like an annoyed child—a child that was smoking a cigarette.

“I don’t know.” He shrugged. “I think he’s meeting some guys from another chapter, though. He’s not the cheating type, don’t you worry.”

I let out a sigh. “Good to know, but I wasn’t even thinking about that.”

“Right. You’re just asking for shits and giggles—like every woman does in the club.” He laughed before heading toward his motorcycle. I reached out and caught his arm. “What?”

“Ride with me in the Tahoe.”

“Fuck that. I’m just going to follow you.”

“No, I need to talk to you.” I glanced around wearily, feeling on edge. “I want to do it in the Tahoe.”

“Uh... You’re with Viper. I don’t blur the lines.”

“Shut up,” I retorted. “I meanttalk, dumbass.”

“God, you even sound like him now.” Gunner smirked at me as he headed around the SUV, ripping open the driver’s side door. “I’m driving. You ride shotgun.”

“Fine.” There was no point in arguing with him. I had been contemplating fordaysabout what I could do to help Viper...

And I was determined to figure outwhowas trying to kill him—but I needed a confidant, someone whowasn’tViper. I needed someone who went fairly under the radar around the club, but still heard everything.

Gunner was my only option.

Well, he was also the only one I knew who wasn’t involved—even though that was still a calculated risk, honestly. I’d just have to feel him out the best I could.

“You’re being really weird.” Gunner started the engine as I climbed into the passenger seat, instantly reaching for the seatbelt. “You look really perplexed or something.”

“Yeah, that’s because I need your help.”

“I’m not a love expert,” Gunner shot back, whipping the SUV out of the parking lot and heading out of the wrought iron gate. “I can’t get my own shit together when it comes to that. I let my girl get away a long time ago, and I don’t know if I’ll ever get her back.”

“Aw, so you actually have a heart,” I teased. “But I really am sorry. I know what it feels like to not have your shit together.”

“Yeah, I know. Anyway,” he cleared his throat, turning down the radio that had been bumping. “What do you need help with? I’m assuming that it has something to do with your article?”

“No,” I blew out a sigh. “I’ve put that on the back burner, to be honest.”

“Oh, that doesn’t sound good at all. I knew that you were official with Viper, but I had no idea it wasthatofficial.”

I shook my head. “You literally make no sense half the time, but anyway, this has to do with something serious—likereallyserious. I need to know that I can trust you.”

He eyed me, his expression shifting. “Uh... I’m not a snitch.”

“Okay, well, I don’t think you’re a snitch, but you might not believe me when I tell you.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, are you a cop?”

“No. I overheard a couple of guys talking the night of the party Tuesday night, and there’s a hit on Viper.”

He went silent for a few moments. “I... I already kind of had that put together. When it was all going down, and Viper told me to run for the door of the café, they didn’t shoot at me even though they had a clear shot. It’s not the first time there’s been a hit on a member of the club, though, especially someone like the VP.”

“Yeah, but I think thisisdifferent.”
