But like I was going to do that.

Where is his biker friend?

I chewed the inside of my cheek as we continued down the road for nearly a mile and a half, my Tahoe shaking and squeaking as we navigated the shitty road. The bushes were growing denser, and the vegetation suddenly made it impossible to see around us.

Clever meeting spot.

My heart raced in my chest as we finally reached a dead end, the road coming to an end at a massive rocky hill—and zero visibility. Viper whipped his bike around, facing the opposite direction. He killed the engine as I pulled up and came jogging in my direction, motioning for me to turn around.

I rolled down the window. “There’s not enough room.”

“Yeah, there is,” his voice sounded strained. “Back over the sage or whatever, just get this thing turned around and get out of here.”

“What? There’s no one here,” I argued. “Why the hell would I leave you alone? We can just wait for your friend to show up first, and then I’ll leave.”

“Fuck,Hannah,” he exasperated. “Do you not see where we are? Youcan’tbe here. I have no idea who the hell I’m meeting. I don’t want you here.”

“Wait, you don’t know who you’re meeting?” I furrowed my brows, all the alarms going off in my head. “Why would you even come out here if you don’t know who you’re meeting? That sounds batshit crazy—and dangerous, considering everything we know. You could be walking into a death trap, Viper.”

“Thanks for the heads up, like I didn’t fucking know that, Hannah,” he leveled with me, his face hard and voice cold. “I know what I’m doing, regardless of what you think.”

“You’re being reckless,” I snapped at him. “And now I’m definitelynotleaving this place—or maybe we should just both leave. Like to hell with it, because I saw the tire tracks of a vehicle in front of you, and there’s nothing here.”

“They probably took the trail off to the left,” Viper said, gesturing to a barely visible trail that took off at the base of the hill. “And if that’s who is waiting for me, they don’t want to be seen.”

“So you shouldleave.” I felt so freaking desperate at the moment, my heart racing from the anxiety and frustration.

Why will he not listen to me?

“I’m not leaving, Hannah. I don’t run from a fight—and if that’s what this is, then I’ll stay for it.”

“But someone could literally just pick you off right here, and you never see it!”

He shook his head at me, glancing around the area. “If they wanted to do that, they would’ve already.”

Chapter 24

Viper

My heart squeezed at the fear in Hannah’s eyes, and it wasn’t that I didn’t feel a little myself, but honestly, this was a normal occurrence for me. I knew the risks that came with my lifestyle, and facing some hit wasn’t that abnormal for an outlaw biker. However, their girl following them right into a potential trap...

Yeah, I wasn’t cool with that.

“You really just need to go, Hannah,” I reiterated for the hundredth time, irritation burning in my chest. “This isn’t a competition for who’s the bravest. You’re a tough woman, and I get that—I respect that, but I donotwant you here.”

I was trying not to raise my voice, because the last thing I needed was for whoever was hanging out undercover to hearwhowas in the SUV. Someone with a problem with me could easily take her out...

Though there was nothing but silence around us.

I glanced down at my watch. It was ten minutes past when they had asked to meet, and I highly doubted thattheywere running late. That’s not how these anonymous meetings ever went...

And I doubted this was some kind of exception to the rule.

They were more than likely watching and waiting, and there was aslightchance that as soon as Hannah pulled out of earshot, they’d take a shot at me, but that wasn’t that believable. More than likely, this wasn’t a death trap.

“Do you hear that?” Hannah perked up, her perfectly fixed eyebrows furrowing as she looked over at me. I was standing in front of the open window, shielding her from the area behind me. While I hadn’t convinced her to leave, Ihadconvinced her to at the very least turn the damn Tahoe around for a quick exit.

“Hear what?” I looked in the same direction she was, which was directly down the road in front of us. However, Hannah stayed quiet, not answering, and suddenly, I heard what she was talking about...
