“He’s a fucking pervert, Gunner,” Robbie seethed.

I stopped at the mention of the word, something triggered inside of me. “What’d he do? The club didnottake kindly to men of that stance.”

“He did horrible things to my sister.”

“Fuck,” I muttered, thinking of Robbie’s teenage sister. “I’ll talk to the club about it and see what they think. Your dad know?”

He shook his head. “Nah, he doesn’t. I don’t think my sister wants him to know about any of it.”

“Right,” I grumbled, feeling overwhelmed with the information. My eyes drifted to my hands in my lap. If anyoneevertouched Hallie in a way she didn’t want them to…

They’d be in a ditch somewhere as soon as I found out.

“Listen,” Robbie’s voice was quiet and more timid. “I came to you because you’ve fucking been there—maybe not exactly—but I know that asshole at the nursing home treated your dad like some kind of science experiment.”

“And I took care of it myself, not pushing it off onto the shoulders of someone else,” I snapped up over at him.

“Ican’tfucking afford to get caught. I have a whole life ahead of me to live. I got big shoes to fill with the department, and the last thing I need to do is fuck up the family reputation by ending up in prison. You already have a record, your life is fucked either way. You’re a lifetime criminal.”

“Real nice thing to say to the guy you want to hire for murder.” I chuckled, but something inside of me broke at the words—something that brought the reality back hard and heavy.

“So you’ll do it?”

“I’ll talk to the club.” With that, I started the truck and jerked the gearshift into drive, leaving Robbie standing in the darkness.

Chapter 9

Hallie

I stared at Gunner’s name on my phone. I hadn’t spoken to him since that night at the church, and that had been days ago. I wasn’t sure where we stood, but he hadn’t reached out to me like I had expected him to…

But maybe he was just giving me space to process everything.

He had admitted the truth that he had lied to me about his father, and maybe it would’ve really shaken me up.

But I was keeping a much bigger secret.

His daughter.

“Ugh.” I set the phone down on my lap, my eyes glancing up from where I was sitting in my car. Living with my mom wasn’t bad, but it hadn’t taken long to know that I needed my own space. I had been living on my own way too long, and she made me feel like I was back in high school. So, I had scheduled a viewing for a rental house a few streets from her house, but she was stuck watching Iris—and Taylor was busy.

And honestly, I just didn’t want to go alone.

Just ask him to go.

My mind betrayed my hard-to-get game, waiting for Gunner to reach out to me on his own. “Fuck, I’ll just do it.” I swooped my phone back up my lap and hit the little phone button beside his name.

It rang.

And rang.

And rang.

“Hello?” His voice picked up right before the fourth.

“Um, hey, it’s Hallie.”

“I know,” he chuckled. “What’s up?”
