He rolled his eyes. “Your head really is as dense as they say it is.”

I ignored the comment, waiting for him just to continue, my phone’s vibrations filing the silence between us.

“I want you to kill Francis,” Robbie finally said, his voice low—like someone might be listening in.

Now that is interesting.

“Why?” I narrowed my eyes at him, trying to read the hesitation on his face. “What’s the guy done to you?”

“I just don’t want my dad to get in trouble.”

Nah, that’s not the truth.

I could see the lie written all over his face. “What’s the real reason? I’ll pull away right now if you keep lying to me.”

His eyes darkened, looking like little beady darts pointed in my direction. “It’s none of your goddamn business. I just want you to take care of it.”

“What the fuck do I look like? A hitman?” I burst into laughter, shaking my head. “I’m not whacking cops for a living.”

“Look, how much will it take, man?” Robbie’s voice cooled off. “I just need it taken care of.”

“He’s got something on you, doesn’t he?” This was starting to get entertaining. I knew that Robbie was an idiot, but this was a new twist I hadn’t seen coming.

He blew out a sharp breath. “Why can’t you just fucking say yes or no?”

“Because I don’t take on any job without a thorough description.”

“You sound like you’re trying to land some corporate position or some shit. You’re already supposed to be taking care of him, I just want to make sure the trigger gets pulled.”

I chuckled. “Why don’t you just do it?”

“I’ve never killed a man before.”

“Okay, so?” I was really starting to find this whole thing amusing.

“You’re the one who’s got a record. I read up on Mack Herford’s file. I know what you did.”

My lips twitched at the mention. “That was years ago.”

“And you took a fucking hammer to his head.”

“Yeah.” My body stiffened. “It was fucking personal, and my rage is the reason I was caught.”

“Well, this is personal for me, not for you, so you won’t have that problem this time.” He continued to lean on my truck, his little snake eyes burning into the side of my face. “I wouldn’t be asking for your help if it wasn’t important.”

Silence filled the gap between us again as I contemplated what he was asking, somewhat offended that he thought Iwouldsay yes. Hits had been carried out plenty of times within the club, but it was brought before the table—not just one sole member. He was treating me like he picked me off some site like Craigslist or something.

And that was just a hard no.

“We don’t kill cops.”

“Yeah, yourclubdoesn’t.”

“So neither do I.”

“This is going nowhere,” he grunted. “I was gonna offer you a hundred thousand to get this matter taken care of, but you’re clearly too dense to see an opportunity, even when it’s brought right to your fucking door.”

I grimaced, thinking about that kind of cash… The club would benefit from that amount. However, Hallie’s sweet face quickly followed the thought—and I knew what the answer was. “I just can’t do it for you, Robbie. I get having beef with someone, and I know how angry it can make you—but killin’ ‘em just doesn’t fix anything.”
