“We don’t killanyonewithout a reason.” Viper was only a few feet behind me, his voice carrying over my shoulder. “So you better just fucking spill it.”

Robbie went quiet, and for a moment, I thought he might not actually say anything at all. “It’s just fucking personal.”

“We don’t kill cops over something personal.” Viper’s voice sounded matter-of-fact, but I couldn’t lie, I was curious. What could some small-town cop have against Robbie?

“I was offering a lot of money.”

“That you can’t get,” I chuckled. Robbie fought my hold, but I shoved him back, easily dominating him. “Your dad needs us to take care of this issue, and we don’t have time to wait on you.”

“Fuck him,” Robbie spewed, spit landing on my cheek. “He has no idea who Francis is. He’s just out to climb the ladder—by whatever means necessary. He’s just another fucking greedy idiot.”

“Ah, so he’s stepping on you then.” I tightened my grip on the front of his white t-shirt. “He a better cop than you? Fuck your girlfriend or something?”

Robbie’s upper lip twitched at the last one. “No. Shut the fuck up.”

“Well, no money, no deal,” Viper cut in. “Doesn’t matter what the fuck he did to you. It’s not any of our business now, since it’s not dealing with shit we always take care of.”

“I’ll have the money soon,” Robbie choked out, his voice sounding almost desperate. “I’ll get it. I swear.”

“Nah, that’s the thing, we know you won’t have it by the time we have to do what we need to—and last I checked, you’re supposed to go along.”

“No way.”

“Yeah, money or not, you’re fucking coming along.”

“No.” Robbie’s face went red. “I don’t want to be associated with you.”

“Right, you just want us to kill the guy,” Viper burst into laughter. “Let him go, Gunner. We’ll pick you up tonight.”

“What time?” Robbie asked, his voice coming out weary.

“Like we’re gonna tell you,” I chuckled, finally letting him go. “When we show up, you just better be fucking ready.”

Robbie let out a sharp exhale. “I don’t know why I agree to anything with you assholes.”

“Thanks,” Viper retorted. “But we just need some collateral.”

His eyes flashed with what I thought might’ve been fear, but he didn’t say anything.

“That’s what I thought,” Viper snapped. “Deal is off to kill your cop, and we’ll see you tonight.”

“Fuck you all,” Robbie spat at us.

I went to lunge for him, but Viper grabbed my arm. “He’ll be traumatized enough as it is tonight. Let’s not take him beat to hell.”

“Touché.” I stopped myself from throwing a punch and spun to follow Viper out the front door. Viper ripped it open, the sun shining into the dimly lit house.

“You know, your whore—girlfriend—whatever she is, is the one that couldn’t get me the money.”

Somethingstoppedin my chest.

“What thefuckdid you just say?” I growled, my vision dotting with red as I turned around.

“Isaid,yourwhorewouldn’t give me the money.”

I have no idea what I did next, but the crack of a nose breaking was the only sound that I could hear.

And it felt fuckinggood.
