“Jasper knew I was pregnant before I took that test?” Callahan was trying her best to digest all the information they were throwing her way. “That was why he invited me over?”

Blake nodded. “He wanted to be there with you when you found out. Hedidn’t want you to go home and be scared and alone.”

Jasper had been taking care of her from the moment he found out she was pregnant. It warmed her heart, andit also thawed some of her irritation toward him.

He meant what he said about being there for her and the baby no matter what.

“If this baby is a boy?”

“He’ll shift, usually around puberty.” Pen looked at her own son in Axie’s arms. “Normal pregnancy, normal birth. Normal childhood, for the most part.” She tacked on, “He would be a little stronger, more agile. No huge differences until puberty.”

“Why am I not freaking out about all of this?” She shook her head, hugging Allison tighter, stealing some of her warmth. “This is life-alteringnews and I’m sitting here like it’s nothing. This doesn’t make sense.”

“It will, sweetheart.” Maddi laid the twin she was holding in the pack-and-play. He’dfallen asleep. “But the rest of the story isn’t for us to tell.”

Callahan sighed, rocking Allison side to side.Jasper.She missed him, but at the same time, she wasn’t ready to see him. They needed to have a big talk about their future and where they went from the moment he threw out his marriage plans. “They’re camping?”

Molly pointed out the back dooratthe mountain and the sun that was beginning to sink behind it. “If you need him, all you have to do is go outside and call him. He’llhear you.”

She did need him,but she wasn’t sure she was ready to hear the rest of their story.

She wasn’t naïve; she could clearly see some of the things Pen and the others weren’t saying out loud. Jace and Axie, Riley and Blake.

They were so young, but already living together.

Some wolves mated for life.

Was Jasper one of them?

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Jasper

Jasperwas worried aboutCallie. He was worried she was hurting and angry. When he said he wanted to marry her, he was trying to get her father to back down.Takeaway his argument. He’d never wanted to upset her. He was impressed with how she’d kicked them both out of the house.

He hated that he’d been exiled to the woods though. He wanted to see her, to explain the rest of histhought process. He wanted her to know she was his and that he’d already joined their souls. No human marriage could ever compare to the connection they now shared.

“Camping is supposed to fun. You’rekilling our vibe.” Riley kicked a booted foot out, shovingJasperto the side. “We went on a long run, we have a fire, we have fancy-ass food thanks to your twin.” He held his arms wide. “This is a great night. Actaccordingly.”

Jasper’sneed to fix things betweenhimand his mate was all consuming.Noamount of pack bonding couldpatchthe ache in his heart. He was feeling unsettled and on edge. His wolf had enjoyed the run, of course he had. Now though, sitting here in this circle jerk was dumb. He was pacing inside him. “My wolf.”

“Wants to go to his mate.” Linc nodded in understanding. “After Maddi found out about us and walked away, I felt like my chest was going to crack in two. I couldn’tnotfollow her. I get what you’re going through.”

“Great, so you won’t mind if I fucking leave.”

He stood, only to be jerked back down to the log he’d been sitting on by Baze. “She isn’t ready to talk to you.”

“No one stopped Linc from going after Maddi like a little puppy.”

Baze shrugged. “I wasn’t alpha then.I couldn’t command him to do anything.”

“Give her some time, Jasper.” Keller reached over and shook his shoulder. “Try to enjoy the time with your pack while you can. Mated with a baby on the way and your sophomore year of college looming?” He laughed. “Your life will never be as carefree as it is in this moment.”

Jaspersat up with a start, his heart pounding out a painful rhythm in his chest. He was panting, like waking from a bad dream. He glanced around, seeing the rest of his pack asleep under the stars. His wolf whimpered, urging him to move, to head down the mountain. To go to his mate.

Jasper didn’t bother to tell anyone where he was going; they would know. He could feel her waiting for him, he could feel her patience. She wasn’t hurt; the baby was okay. She was ready to talk, so she’d called to him.
