She turned down a hallway, not bothering to see if I was following, and stepped into a room.

I followed her through the doorway and nearly collapsed when I saw her.

Emma.

I raced to the side of the bed where she slept peacefully. The light from the large windows poured into the room, illuminating the creamy white walls with a few decorative pictures of nature; hardly a prison cell. I scanned Emma frantically, a few wires led to a monitor that softly clicked and beeped near the bed.

I pulled the chair up to the side of the bed and stroked her hair, taking her hand in mine. The color was back in her cheeks, and she looked okay. I felt my eyes misting as I looked up at Agent Zuri.

“She did beautifully, and the baby looks like it’s going to be just fine.”

“Is she sedated?” I asked, nearly unable to get the words out.

“She’ll be waking up soon.” Agent Zuri smiled. “I’ll be back later, but we have a lot more to discuss. You’re a great Agent, Reynolds.” She nodded at Emma. “You two make quite the team.” She paused. “I’d love to have you working for the good guys when you’re ready.”

I looked back and forth between Emma and Agent Zuri, who was eyeing her. “There is not a chance in hell you’re recruiting her.” I scoffed.

She just smiled. “We’ll see about that.” She lingered a moment longer, “Reynolds… she’ll be safe here. Viktor and his team couldn’t get in here, even if they dared to try.” She gave me a smile and with that, she disappeared into the hallway.

EMMA

I satin the recovery room and slurped down a strawberry Jello cup, my eyes ping-ponging back and forth as Mason argued with Agent Zuri at the foot of the bed.

“There’s no way in hell I’m letting you evaluate her for field work.” Mason spat, “What are you going to do? Send her and my unborn child back into Viktor’s clutches as bait.”

“It wouldn’t be like that.” Agent Zuri was getting just as pissed at Mason as he was at her.

“It would be exactly like that,” Mason thundered.

“All we need her to do is tell Viktor she wants to meet, and we’ll take care of the rest. She’ll be completely safe the whole time,” Agent Zuri emphasized.

“You’re telling me there is a one hundred percent guarantee she won’t get hurt?”

Agent Zuri huffed, knowing that Mason had her. “I’m saying we will keep her safe. I can promise you that.”

“It doesn’t fucking matter. I don’t know you from Adam. Your promise means nothing to me,” Mason yelled.

I waved my hand. “Uh, hey, hello.” I licked my lips. “We’re talking about me here. Don’t I get a say?”

In unison, they both spoke.

“No.” Mason roared.

“Of course.” Agent Zuri responded, immediately scowling at Mason.

I continued, “I just want assurance that my terrorism charges are dropped, permanently, erased from my file, that they won’t even exist anymore. If you can do that, I’m in.”

“Emma.” Mason looked devastated.

Agent Zuri nodded. “I’ll see what I can arrange.” And with that, she pulled out her phone and slipped into the hallway.

Mason came to the side of the bed and knelt down, taking my hand. “I can’t let you put yourself in harm's way.”

I set my Jello cup down and raked my hand through his hair tenderly. “We have to end this, Mason. Let’s help them put him away, and then you and I can just walk away if we want. I just want to be with you and not have to be looking over our shoulder every second of every day. You know?”

Mason nodded, reaching into his pocket and pulled out a twisty tie that was twisted into a small circle. “Speaking of being with you…” He took a breath. “I love you Emma Mitchell. I will love you until the day I die. I can’t bear the thought of waiting even another second to make you mine.Officially.” He smirked. “Will you marry me?” His concerned brow quirked into a nervous expression as he held the twisty tie ring. “I wish I had a proper ring with me right now, but I wouldn’t dare let you out of my sight until this is over, so this will have to do for the time being. I love you with the depths of my being, with all that I am, and I will take care of you and our child, no matter what your answer is. But you’d make me the happiest man in the world if you said yes.” His eyes misted over, “So I hope you say yes.”
