Even if I did max out my credit card and hire a moving company, I’d have to have them move my shit somewhere, and I knew a storage unit large enough was more than I could afford if I wasn’t in business to pay for it. I’d also barely been able to make ends meet in my current building, and it was by far the cheapest around. Meaning the other problem was that even if I could get my stuff out, I didn’t see how I’d be able to rent out space somewhere else.

If I didn’t figure out something soon, I was going to lose it all. And at the moment, it seemed like even figuring something else out wasn't enough. It was slowly dawning on me that this was an impossible hole to climb out of. I sank my head into my hands and finally let the tears pour out of me, in the middle of the beach, letting the ocean wash my sorrows away.

I can’t lose everything I worked so hard for. Everything my parents invested in me. What am I going to do…

DAMIAN

“Wow, she’s just beautiful.”I snugly held Carter's new daughter, Charlotte, in my arms.

“Can you believe that’s half me?” Carter beamed at me, clearly proud of himself.

“Naw, this is all Sarah, both halves. She couldn’t be this beautiful otherwise.” I grinned at my buddy, teasing him.

“Aww yeah, you’re probably right.” Carter looked over at his wife with admiration.

“It’s the wildest thing, man, I can’t believe it. It was crazy. Sarah was just…” He stood staring in awe at her. “I’m the luckiest man in the world.”

Sarah materialized and scooped Charlotte out of my arms. “Hi sweet girl.” She turned towards us. “I’m going to feed her and then put her down for her nap. You know, Damian, you could have one of your own if you’d just get serious about settling down.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that.” I smiled at Sarah and she smiled back deviously, shaking her head as she went upstairs.

Carter poured two glasses of whiskey and handed one of them to me.

I raised my glass. “To Charlotte.”

He raised his, “And Sarah.”

We clinked our glasses and Carter sat for a moment, his admiring eyes lingering on where Sarah was last in the room.

“You seem like you’re in a good mood.” Carter looked at me, his eyes waiting expectantly.

“Do I?” I put him off.

“Especially good. Like when you were with Amelia, good.”

“Don’t talk about Amelia.” I snapped more intensely than I meant to.

“Sorry. Sorry. All I’m saying is, I think Sarah was on to something. You’ve got that stupid grin on your face like you used to have.”

“I just closed a huge deal this week. I’m in a good mood. What can I say?”

“Bull-fucking-shit man, this is not about a deal.” He called me out.

I smirked over the rim of my whiskey glass. “Maybe you’re right.”

He looked pleased that he had clocked me. “Good. I’m glad, whoever she is, she’s a lucky lady.”

I pursed my lips. “It was just a one-night stand, no one I’ll ever see again.”

Carter gave me a look, and I rolled my eyes. “I call bullshit twice.”

I clicked my tongue and looked at him before shaking my head and sighing. “Fine. I may have spent a few days with a goddess of a woman who let me fuck her up one side and down the other. But that’s it, okay?”

“Dame, I know that look, and it’s more than just being cunt-struck. But you tell yourself whatever you want. Just don’t be disappointed when she gets locked down by some other schmuck, because you didn’t call her back soon enough. The good ones always go quick.”

I grunted in response, suddenly feeling in a sour mood. Carter stood up and clapped me on the back. “Let’s go shoot some pool.”
