“Let’s just say we didn’t have to try long before Sarah got pregnant.” Carter chuckled.

“You dog.” I drummed my fingers anxiously on the bar top.

“You gotta relax. She’s fine, man. She’s right across the street. Just let her enjoy herself.”

I nodded, though I found myself distracted as Carter and I caught up. Finally, Carter checked his watch.

“I should be getting home. I don’t want to leave Sarah on her own for too long.” He put his hand on my shoulder. “Don’t be a stranger. In fact, bring Addison over sometime. Sarah and I would love to meet her.”

I pondered the thought. Addison was a little younger than the three of us, but Addison was driven and mature for her age, and I knew she'd probably be fast friends with Sarah. It wasn’t the worst idea Carter had ever had.

I sat in the car with Mike, waiting for the call or text from Addison that she was ready. It was getting late, and I was getting agitated, wondering if she was alright.

“Nothing?” I asked Mike.

Mike chuckled. “No, not yet.”

“I’m going in to check on her.” I briskly got out of the car and went into the restaurant. I glanced around and didn’t see her. After checking in with the restaurant hostess, she informed me that two women had sprinted through the kitchen and out the backdoor earlier.

I burst back out onto the street, agitated. Why would she leave without calling me? She knew Mike was waiting and would take them wherever they wanted. I dialed her number. No answer.

Fuck.

“She’s not in the restaurant.” I leaned through the car window of the front door, talking to Mike. “They snuck out the back.”

“I’m sure she’s fine. She’s just been cooped up in that house of yours, or at the office for too long. Let her stretch her wings.”

I glared at Mike. “She has a stalker, Mike. You, more than anyone, know that. You also know he’s been getting increasingly more bold. I don’t want to guess what he might do if he catches her alone. I don’t like it.”

We spent the next forty minutes driving up and down the street around the restaurant, before Addison finally answered her phone.

“Hey.” She said as if nothing was wrong.

“Where the fuck are you?” I snapped into the phone.

“Hello to you too, rude. I’m with Jules.” Her tone turned irritated.

I asked again, more irritated. “I didn’t ask who you were with. I asked where you were.”

“I’m safe, I’m fine.”

“Why didn’t you call me, or Mike? You know he would have taken you anywhere.”

“I know.”

“Jesus Addison, you had me worried sick. Where are you? We’re coming to pick you up.”

She grumbled out a low noise in the back of her throat. “I’m at Julie's place.”

“Sit tight. I’m coming to get you.”

“Whatever.” She hung up the phone.

When I got there, Julie answered the door. “Hi.” She said with a grin. “Come on in,Mr. West.”

I stepped into the apartment, and Addison was in a change of clothes, curled up on the couch with a pint of ice cream.

“Enjoying yourself.”
