Addison anxiously fidgetedin her seat, raking her fingers through the ribbon on the gift bag she’d brought as a housewarming gift.

“Stop fidgeting. They’re going to love you.”

“What if they think I’m too young for you?”

“Age is just a number, love. They’re not the type to pass judgment.”

Addison blew out a breath. “If you say so.”

Over the last few months, Addison and I had been glued at the hip, in perfect sync. I’d taken some days off here and there to make sure she was getting back on her feet. I hated to see her so sick every morning. She usually would perk up in the afternoon, and by evening be able to get some solids down. However, the next morning she was right back in the bathroom, feeling miserable again.

Even though Addison had waited to tell me about the pregnancy, I’d known. When she’d come home and locked herself in the spare room, I wasn’t sure why, but after a few mornings of hearing her sick in the bathroom, I knew.

In fact, I had been certain of it after our dinner date, but Addison had been so convinced that it was food poisoning that I thought perhaps I was wrong.

When I heard her throwing up morning after morning, I knew she’d probably taken the test a bit too early, but there was no way she wasn’t pregnant.

I hated being locked on the other side of that door, knowing she was suffering. Wondering why she wasn’t talking to me, telling me the news. Fearing that maybe she didn’t want to have a child with me.

I tried to give her ample space, but eventually I had to check on her. Whether she wanted me to or not. And I had meant what I said about needing her. The moment she’d pulled away, I knew I couldn’t ever lose her. She was integral to my happiness, and I needed her in my life.

I pulled up in Carter and Sarah’s driveway and parked the silver Porsche I was driving.

“Ready?”

“I guess so.”

I rounded the car and held the door open for her as she climbed out. I gave her a smile as we waited for the Anderson’s to answer their door.

Sarah answered with a big grin. “Hello you two. Addison, it is such a pleasure to finally meet you. I’ve been hearing all about you, and I couldn’t wait to finally put a face to a name.” Sarah looked back and forth between us with a big grin. “Well, come in, you two.” She beckoned.

“Don’t screw this up.” Sarah whispered into my ear as she took our coats.

I rolled my eyes at her.

“Thank you for having us.” Addison smiled shyly. “Um, here, this is for you.”

Sarah opened the gift bag and pulled out a massive candle.

Addison cleared her throat. “These are my favorite, they burn for hours and hours.”

“This is so thoughtful. Thank you, Addison.” Sarah hugged Addison and immediately set the candle on the table in the entry; Sarah rummaged through a drawer, finally pulling a lighter out. “Oh boy, this does smell good. You’re going to have me hooked.” Sarah laughed.

Addison relaxed slightly, looking pleased that Sarah liked the gift.

I guided Addison into the dining room.

“My man!” Carter materialized and clapped me on the back. He clocked Addison and gave me a look.

“Addison.” He hugged her. “Damian didn’t tell me you were such a looker.”

Addison blushed. “Oh, uh, thanks.”

“Sit down, sit down.” Carter waved around the table. “Dame?” He pointed to a whiskey decanter, and I nodded. “I don’t even have to ask.” Carter chuckled, talking to Addison.

“Wine?” Sarah came back into the dining room.

Addison threw me a quick glance. “Um, yes, please.” She smiled, and let Sarah pour her a glass, but after a few of the tiniest sips I’d ever seen, she eventually left it at the corner of her plate, more or less untouched.
