Amity’s gaze switched to her. I saw Conor move in front of her instantly, protecting her, just as I wanted to do with Sloane.

One shot and I could take Amity out, but if her trigger finger was pushing down on the trigger, it could go off with the shot and kill Sloane too.

“What do you want?” I asked her, hoping she would focus back on me. I knew her. I’d known her since we were kids in school, surely I could reason with her.

“She wants…you,” Sloane grunted.

I could barely process what had been said before I saw Amity release Sloane to smack her in the head with the butt of the gun. I saw Amity aim her gun to shoot at Sloane. I pulled my gun free and shot at her hand. Amity dropped the gun and yelped, looking down at her hand. Blood fell freely from her wound. I reached out and grabbed Sloane to pull her behind me. Conor and Teeghan took her and left the house. I ran after Amity as she scrambled to the window but for some reason, when I had the shot, I didn’t take it.

Had the assassin in me become soft with age? There was I time, and not so long ago, when I would have gladly taken that shot and without question.

Before I could stop her, she ran for a large window to the side of the room. Pulling my gun back out, I shot at the frame but she was already out by the time I got to it. When I looked down, she was running. I ran to the back door to make chase but by the time I got there, she was gone. There was a patch of forest behind her house which she had disappeared into.

We got Sloane.

That was all that mattered…for now.

I put my gun in its holster and headed out to make sure Sloane was okay.

CHAPTERSIX

SLOANE

I took the cup of tea from Killian gratefully and huddled under the blanket near the fireplace. He sat down on the opposite chair. Since he had rescued me from Amity, he hadn’t said a word. Instead, I had stayed in the back of the car with Teeghan who had let me sleep on her lap and he’d driven us back to town, back to the estate because I didn’t want to go back to the cottage.

Now, it was just me and him. Teeghan and Conor had left an hour ago and yet Killian had been calm enough to let me breathe.

Still now, instead of rushing to ask me what had happened, he was sitting there, probably chewing himself out for not protecting me better.

“She’s in love with you,” I told him, sipping at the tea. It was warming me up on this unseasonably cold night. I couldn’t tell if I was shaking from the shock of having a gun at my temple or the chill in the air. “Amity.”

“I’m no angel, you fucking know that, and I’ve done shit that I don’t want you to know about. I probably shouldn’t have gotten involved with Amity, especially considering her marital status with one of my brothers’ men.”

It hurt to think of him sleeping with her, knowing my history with her in school, but I’d been the one to walk away from Killian. I knew I had no right to be upset about it.

“She loved you before I came to town. She said she had been trying to get you to notice for years before I came here and you and I fell in love. I should have seen it earlier. The first time we had sex, she was so upset with me and that was when our friendship died out.”

“All this time?” he asked. “I never looked at her like someone I wanted to date. Hell, I didn’t want to date at all and then you blew into my life and that’s all I wanted.”

I felt oddly vindicated by that comment.

“Was she really married?”

Killian nodded. “Yeah, he was killed in a shootout. He worked for Conor.”

“But she never loved him?”

“I don’t know but she cheated on him a fair bit.”

“I think she always loved you, Kill. She didn’t want to kill me but I think she would have if you didn’t pick her.”

Killian sighed and looked over at the fire that was mesmerizing.

“I’m sorry you got caught up in this.”

I didn’t know what to say but I could feel the pain in his voice and that hurt me. It wasn’t his fault that I was friends with Teeghan. She had happily adopted the O’Farrell way of life and she was happy.

“I won’t lie, Kill, it was scary but something inside of me knew you’d save me.”
