"Have you had a serious girlfriend?" I asked him. I had no idea where the thought had even come from, but it was out in the open now.

"Yeah, one."

"Just one?"

"One serious one, yeah."

"What happened?"

"She didn't like this lifestyle," he replied. I could see it wasn't exactly a subject he liked to discuss.

"Well, I'm sorry, Caleb. That sucks."

He shrugged his shoulders, but when he looked out the window, I could see it still pained him. I wondered what she had done to him for him to still pine for her.

We remained in silence until we got to the bank. Caleb accompanied me inside as I showed my ID and asked to see the box I shared with Scarlette. The bank teller looked at Caleb behind me, and I could see he didn't approve. It was probably the neck tattoos, but I didn't care. This wasn't about who I was with, this was about the box.

"Do you have an issue?" I asked him, feeling somewhat annoyed.

"No, of course not, ma'am," he said with a fake smile. "Follow me."

I told Caleb to come with me, because I needed the backup, and we followed the asshole down a narrow hallway. He opened a vault door, and we stepped through. I used my key and opened the box labelled 436. The asshole had to turn his key too in order for it to unlock. We needed the most secure box possible otherwise this never would have worked.

"Anything else, ma'am?" he asked. I shook my head, and he left the vault. Caleb came over to me and handed me the backpack he'd taken from the back seat.

"How do you know she will come here to get it? How are you communicating with her?"

"We have a code," I told him. "She knows about this plan because she came up with it years ago when Judd started to become violent. She's been trying to get me to leave for years."

"I hate that you didn't tell us what was happening," he said. "I would have gladly helped you."

"I was thinking it was best for Christa to have her daddy around," I said as I lifted the lid of the box and looked inside. Scarlette had left me a letter. I grabbed it out and flipped it open. "But I don't want her to think that a man should treat her that way and I don't want him to take her from me. That's the reason for the drastic measures."

I started to read Scarlette's letter:

Callie,

If you're reading this message, it means it came to our plan. I have a phone code for you to use. Text me on the number below with the following code:

X0X – You want to disappear and need me to distract Judd.

XX – You plan to kill him and need my help.

I will do whatever I can for you, babe.

Scar

"How much canyou trust this Scar?" Caleb asked.

"With my life," I said. "I need to use your phone though. I got rid of my phone when Indigo left because I knew Judd would have tracked it."

"Anything."

I pulled the poison out and placed the vial in the box. Once it was inside, I closed the lid and hid the letter in my bag before I locked it and Caleb put it back in the hole in the wall. A lock clicked once it was inside, and I zipped up my bag again. Caleb took it off me and hung it over his shoulder as we left the vault. We passed the asshole, and he came out from his desk and smiled at us.

"Do you have everything you need?"

"I do."
