"And your bag?" he asked. "We do reserve the right to check it upon departure."

I felt myself freeze. Caleb moved forward.

"Just try and take it from me, mate."

I could see the asshole shrink back. "I suppose we can make an exception this time around."

He moved back to his desk and picked up his phone. Caleb took my arm and led me out the door.

"He's working for Judd. He probably couldn't get into your box, but he knows it exists. We need to go now."

I felt my heart race as we ran to the car and Caleb took off.

"Do you think Scarlette is safe?" I asked him as we neared the house.

"By the sound of that letter, she's thought of all the risks, so she is safe. But I can take her out of the equation. Just give me the word."

It would be faster, and I could get away with a lot. I know he was a professional, I know he would be able to do it quicker than poison, but I didn't want to put that on him. This was my mess.

"You know I need to do this myself," I said. "But thank you."

He smiled over at me as he pulled into the driveway to my father's compound. "You know where to find me if you need to."

"Thank you, Caleb."

I meant it too. He'd always been there for my father, for me, even when my stepmother had brought me to tears when I was fifteen. He'd put his strong arm around me and comforted me when I'd felt the most alone. If only I had fallen for Caleb.

My life would be so different now and I probably wouldn't be needing to poison someone. What was I doing to my soul? I was acting like it was easy. Just like my father thought it was that easy to take someone's life.

The sins of my father were going to haunt me through the rest of my life, especially if I were successful.

But I had to do this. Otherwise, he'd take Christa and I would lose the only reason for my breathing. She deserved a life away from this.

She deserved everything.

CHAPTERFIVE

Days Later

Clare cameinto the room as I finished my breakfast. My daily call from Christa had lifted my spirits some and I was able to finish my breakfasts now. It would be over in a few days, and then I could disappear with her. We would be able to live our lives with freedom.

"This came for you, Callie."

I looked over at the box she was carrying. It was larger than what I would expect. A bigger fear rushed over me though. No one should know I was here. Only Scarlette knew and truthfully, she'd never risk sending me something.

Caleb sensed my unease, and he jumped up from the couch and rushed over.

"Wait," he said, holding my hands back. "Who knows you're here?"

"Scarlette but she'd never send something here."

He looked at the label.

"What did the courier look like?" he asked Clare.

"No courier, it was on the doorstep."

"Get the security tapes from the cameras out front," he barked at the guys who were standing around. "Where's Lou? He should be guarding the gate."
