The one who surprised me the most was Connor, though in retrospect, I should’ve seen it coming. He’s been desperate for a fresh start for years. And the compound is full of people like him—people who left the estates, who can relate to everything he’s been through.

Kirby, Monroe, Adrienne, Calla, and Mom though, at least they’re staying.

Seeming to sense my shift in mood, Reid sets me on my feet outside the bathroom and smooths his hands over my hair until his hands cradle the back of my skull.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you today?”

I shake my head. “You have that meeting with the academy staff. One of us needs to be there to get things moving if we want it reopened before next semester. I’ll be fine.”

He presses his lips to my forehead and rests them there. “With how often you’ll see them, you won’t even notice they’re gone.”

I nod. Even with how short of a time I’ve known the wolves, I think I’m going to miss them just as much.

“You want me to be the bad guy and decline their transfer requests? We can find a different partner for Cam.”

I laugh, shake my head, and interlace my fingers behind his neck.

“The only thing I need,” I murmur, my lips brushing his, “is for you to take off all your clothes.”

He smiles against my mouth. “That I can do.”
