Shit.

At least teleporting worked, so I’m not worried about my magic failing me, but this isn’t good.

I whip my gaze around, taking in the horrific sight.

Bodies litter the ground, both Malevs and monsters. To my left, huge creatures are tearing into one another. A tall, violet-colored monster rakes its claws across the broad Malev’s chest, spilling trails of black blood down its front. The Malev roars, spinning around and kicking the monster square in the chest, knocking him off balance. Together, they crash to the ground in a tangle of limbs, biting and clawing at one another, each one fighting to kill.

To my right, a slender gray monster pops the bulbous head off a Malev, whose body crumples to the ground right after. The monster drop kicks the head, which bounces off into the crowd, before jumping on another Malev and gouging out its eyes.

I swallow hard. I was in a couple of fights in high school, but nothing like this. Nothing where my life was on the line, and I might have overestimated my capabilities.Just a bit.

Before I have any more time to assess the situation and work out an attack strategy–as if a few extra seconds will make a difference–a beastly looking Malev steps in front of me. It’s tall and hulking, every limb of its inky black body rippling with muscles, and it flashes a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth.

“What a treat,” it hisses, clicking his claws together. “Someone brought us a snack to refuel. I don’t think I’ll share.”

I scrunch my nose at the pungent odor pouring off of him and step back into a fighting stance, my hands shooting up by my face as I tap into the magic begging to be unleashed. It’s vibrating beneath my skin so hard it makes my bones rattle, but I don’t want to waste any of it.

“Try to take a bite and I’ll knock the teeth out of your skull,” I threaten, eyes narrowing.

It growls, bending its knees and launching itself at me.

I scream, diving out of the way and losing my balance, crashing to the ground instead. The uneven ground bites into my skin, ripping a hole in the knee of my jeans, and I roll over in time to see the Malev whirl in my direction. It lunges again, and I throw up my hands instinctively. My thoughts are too frazzled to focus on a single spell as the beast gets closer, claws outstretched and ready to grab me.

The only thing I can think iskill.

I want to crush this thing like a giant bug.

My magic reacts, rushing from my fingertips and wrapping around the Malev with invisible tendrils. They tighten, restricting the thing’s movements, and continue to squeeze until I hear bones crack. It roars, fighting against the magic slowly crushing it to death, but the noise is cut off abruptly.

Its body shrinks to half its normal width before falling to the ground with lifeless eyes.

I exhale shakily, kicking away from the corpse, and scramble to my feet.

“Holy fuck,” I breathe, turning to run, even though I have nowhere to go. A hundred bodies block my way, and another Malev slips up to me from the side.

This one doesn’t speak, just lunges for me with a horrifying hiss, and I barely dodge its sharp teeth aiming for my shoulder. My magic pools in the middle of my chest, exploding through my hands in a ball of light that slams into the Malev a moment later. He flies back, landing hard on the ground, and doesn’t move again.

I celebrate for a second, proud that I’ve already taken down two demons, but it’s short-lived. There are at least a thousand to go, and I haven’t seen any sign of Elio, Azarius, or Rafe. I want to find them, make sure they’re alright, and fight beside them if I can.

I want to show them how strong I am, that I can protect myself and don’t need to be babysat like a child.

Something grabs me by the back of the neck, spiked fingers digging into my skin mercilessly, and I scream. It lifts me off the ground, and I kick out helplessly, trying to make contact and missing every time.

“What do we have here?” a gravelly voice asks in my ear.

“The grim reaper,” I bite out, reaching for his hand and clawing at his fingers in vain. My nails are useless against his hard armor-like skin.

The thing laughs, which only fuels my anger, and I close my eyes, trying to tap into my magic. It’s hard to focus on it when I’m being dangled in the air, waved around like a rag doll, but I finally manage.

I reach up with both hands, grabbing the wrist behind my head, and focus on setting this mother fucker on fire. Flames roar from my fingertips, thankfully not burning my skin in the process, and the Malev howls in pain.

He tosses me forward onto the ground, and I catch myself before face-planting in the dirt. When I roll over, the Malev’s hand is barely hanging onto its arm, its skin blistering and weeping from being burned.

My stomach turns, but I swallow down the nausea.

“You fucking bitch,” it growls, looking between me and its injured hand.

“Here, I’ll make the other one match.” I grind my teeth and unleash another wave of fire that completely engulfs the demon, licking across his skin, burning every inch of him.
