When he sags to the ground with a sickening crunch, my heart skips an excited beat.

Three down, a million to go.

I get to my feet, my body screaming in pain at the movement, but adrenaline carries me through the melee. I dodge punches, dive around brawling creatures left and right, searching desperately for any sign of my mates. A flash of chalk white, a set of wings, a whisper of smoke.

But I come up short.

“Azarius!” I call out, my voice hardly penetrating the crash of noises around me. I’m probably just going to draw more attention to myself at this point, but I don’t care. “Elio!”

A Malev lurches at me out of nowhere, and I squeak before somehow teleporting to another part of the field. It isn’t intentional, but I’m thankful my magic is so reactive after being dormant my entire life. It seems I have good instincts–good enough anyway–and they’ve saved me a few times already.

However, my good instincts don’t prepare me for the lancing pain that explodes in my side suddenly, and I look down to see a trail of blood spilling down my shirt.

“Shit.” I spin around, trying to find my assailant, and I see a small, beady-eyed Malev nearby licking its claws clean.

“Delicious,” it says, a wicked smile curling its lipless mouth. “I can’t wait to drink you dry.”

I wince, the pain creeping its way through my middle and crawling up my spine. “I’d like to see you try.”

I fight through the pain to tap into my power, letting it bubble beneath my skin, but before I can unleash it on this hideous Malev, a streak of white appears out of nowhere and snaps the thing’s neck. The demon falls to the ground, dead, and Azarius is standing in his place. Unlike in my dream, his horns are intact, but there is a mix of blood smeared across his body.

I don’t know how much is his, and I’m not sure I want to. The important thing is that he’s okay, alive, and he’s here.

“Devyn, what the fuck are you doing here?” he growls, rushing toward me as his eyes drop to my side. “And you’re hurt. You need to get out of here. What were you thinking?”

There’s no time to explain everything to him, and even less time to argue.

“I’m here to fight,” I say, checking over my shoulder for anyone approaching.

Azarius glares at me. “You can’t be fucking serious.”

“You can use my help,” I argue impatiently. “Ignatius helped me unlock my magic. I’ve already killed Malevs, Az. I can help.”

His jaw falls slack, the confusion evident in his expression. “Ignatius?”

“There’s no time to explain. Please just trust me,” I demand. “I had to know that you were okay, and it looks like you could use all hands on deck.”

Azarius’ eyes flick behind me, watching the area around us closely as monsters and Malevs continue to rip each other to shreds around us. He wants to argue, I know he does, but out of the three, he’s also the one that’s most likely to take me at my word and believe in me.

“You’ve already killed Malevs?” he asks, but rather than waiting for an answer, he grabs me and pulls me out of the way.

A Malev barrels by, barely missing me, and I curse under my breath. If I expect him to let me stay and fight, I’m going to have to be more convincing. I’m going to have to prove what I can do.

I spin on the spot, my magic already building and ready to be sent out, and lock eyes with the Malev that nearly hit me. It’s short and bulky, with six legs and flaming red eyes. Az shifts behind me, probably about to pounce on the thing and bash its head in, but I lash out with my magic, slicing the demon clean in half. Blood gushes from the two halves of its body, and they fall in opposite directions to the ground.

Damn.Even I didn’t see that one coming.

Azarius stares at me, brows furrowed as he tries to process what just happened, but he ends up shaking his head with a sigh. “Fuck. Fine, you can fight. But stay close to me.”

“Deal. Have you seen Elio or Rafe?”

“Rafe is fine. Elio and I got separated a while ago, but last I knew, he was doing alright,” he says. “Now, let’s go. Stay close.”

ChapterThirty-One

DEVYN

Imight not be a trained fighter, but I manage to hold my own with Azarius at my side. However, I’m well aware that I would be useless in this fight without my magic. I can’t take on one of these things in hand to hand combat.
