Maverick went into the office every day that week, even on Saturday, and on Sunday he holed up in his office with Sawyer while he urged her to ‘go out and have fun.’

Things had definitely changed between them. While their truce seemed to still be in effect and he was as kind and gracious as ever, the kisses when he got home were now reserved only for Sawyer. And there hadn’t even been a hint that he wanted her sexually anymore. Olivia had no idea why.

Maybe he had a girlfriend at the office?

That seemed unlikely. The first night she met him he’d told her he was as faithful as they came. She believed it then, and she believed it now. Besides, he wouldn’t risk nullifying the prenup when they were so close to getting divorced, anyway.

Maybe she should have been more gracious when she first unwrapped the diamond earrings from ‘Sawyer’ instead of giving Maverick the stink eye. But she had made sure to thank him properly, even though she’d threatened otherwise when they’d talked on the phone.

And if he’d thought she was rude, which, okay, she had been, it had been more for show than anything. But even if he didn’t know it’d been for show—which she was pretty sure he did—it didn’t seem like his style to hold a grudge over something like that. Not to mention, she’d been sure to wear them every day so he knew she loved them.

That was the only reason she could come up with.

Frankly, she missed him. Not just the sex, although that had been amazing, but their conversations. She had hoped when she moved out they’d still have them, but considering they’d gotten a lot more superficial and they were still living under the same roof, she wasn’t optimistic.

She needed to shake things up.

Chapter Forty-Two

Maverick

They hadn’t sex in almost a week, and he was having a hard time even sitting at the kitchen island without getting stiff, thinking about her hanging her head upside down off the granite and pulling his cock deep into her throat.

The woman was a goddess. He knew that the first night he met her. Living with her these last few months only solidified that. He had no idea how he was supposed to change his feelings for her, but he knew he needed to try. Not having sex seemed like the best place to start. If they kept screwing he’d never get her out of his system. He wasn’t stupid.

Or maybe he was.

Because he almost believed her when she showed up at three a.m. feigning she thought it was her turn to feed Sawyer—even though they’d been on this schedule for a few weeks now.

But the lacy black negligee she had on when he met her in the hall had him suspicious. He’d never seen it before. He would definitely have remembered the way it made his cock move.

Olivia

She heard Sawyer start to cry in the middle of the night and swung her legs off the bed, then checked the mirror one last time for any price tags she might have missed.

It was hard to say, “Oh, this old thing?” when there was proof it was anything but.

Olivia had decided to pull out the sexy negligee Rose had made her buy for her wedding night. The one she’d never used.

“There’s no time like the present,” she’d murmured when she put it on. The she laid down and fell asleep. The past few weeks, she’d been able to shut off listening for Sawyer’s cry at three a.m., since that was when Maverick got up with him. Not tonight. Tonight she’d decided to get up, too.

She waited to come out of her room until she heard his bedroom door open, then she walked out and ran into him in the hall—as planned.

And the look he gave her when he saw what she was wearing was also according to plan.

So far, so good.

“What are you doing up?” he asked, his voice raspy with sleep.

“I thought it was my turn to feed him?”

He cocked his head with an amused smile.

“No, I’ve been taking the middle of the night shift for a while now.”

“Oh, well, since I’m up, I’ll nurse him. You can go back to bed.”
