He hesitated, exactly like she thought he would.

Then he said, “Okay, I’ll get up with him at six.”

And turned around.

What. The. Hell?

**

He was up and gone when she woke up the next morning. The note on the counter told her Sawyer had been fed and changed, and he’d be home for dinner.

Olivia decided she’d try one more time. She went to her room around four to do her hair and makeup and put on clean clothes—free of baby vomit.

She cringed when she caught a glimpse of herself before jumping in the shower. No wonder he wasn’t attracted to her anymore. When did she turn into a frump?

Although she hadn’t been frumpy last night. Far from it.

When he walked through the door, she looked up from where she was nursing Sawyer in the little nook in the kitchen. He looked tired as he took loosened his red and blue striped tie.

“Hi. Everything go okay?”

“As expected.”

“I’m sorry about the crossed wires last night. I blame it on my lack of sleep. I hope I didn’t screw your schedule up too badly.”

“It was fine. I actually had a chance to work out.”

That made her jerk her head up.

“You worked out? With who?”

It came out way more accusatory than she’d intended.

The corner of his mouth turned up.

“No one. I ran on the treadmill before I left for the office.”

“Oh.”

Of course, he’d meant actually working out, not the euphemism they’d referred to as ‘working out’.

“Something smells good,” he observed.

“I put one of Juanita’s lasagnas in the oven. It should be ready soon.”

“Let me go get changed, then I’ll take care of getting him a new diaper.”

He returned ten minutes later dressed in a pair of jeans and a Navy sweatshirt, and took Sawyer from her. As usual, he was beaming when he started his nightly conversation with his son.

“How’s my little man, today? Were you a good boy for your mom?”

“He’s getting closer to rolling over. I bet any day now.”

So, maybe you should stay home this week.

“Don’t do it without me, okay, buddy?”

Their son cooed like he was agreeing to what his father just asked.
