“And I already told you, I want to make sure you have options about working.”

Her eyes welled again and big, fat tears rolled down her cheeks when she whispered, “Thanks.”

He reached for her, then clenched his fist and brought it down to his side.

“Of course. I’ve got your back, Liv.”

Whoever he did fall in love with someday was going to be a lucky woman.

Ugh. And she was going to be Sawyer’s stepmom.

Olivia hated her already.

Chapter Forty-Six

Olivia

It took the rest of the week, but Sawyer did eventually settle into his new routine. Maverick had been a godsend, showing up early in the morning so she could finally get some sleep.

On Saturday, her day off, he still showed up early in the morning. “I’ll take him today so you can rest and get caught up with laundry, or whatever else you need to do.”

Olivia wanted to ask why he was so good to her, but she already knew the answer. She was sure he was probably just as good to Patricia, although she’d yet to meet his ex-wife.

Monday, her first official full day back, she had patients scheduled and quickly fell behind, so she was late picking Sawyer up from Maverick’s.

As she leaned down to collect the diaper bag, her stomach growled loudly.

Embarrassed, she said, “Sorry. I didn’t get a chance to grab lunch from the cafeteria today.”

“Do you have food at home?”

No. Well, cereal.

“Oh, yeah.”

He raised an eyebrow at her. “When did that happen?”

“I have food,” she replied defensively.

“Take some enchiladas. Juanita made them today.”

Her stomach rumbled at the thought of his housekeeper’s delicious cooking.

She was starving, so that beat out her pride. “That sounds great. Thank you.”

The next morning, when she went through the kitchen on her way to the garage, she discovered a brown paper sack on the counter with her name on it.

She opened it up to find a sandwich in a sealed plastic bag, granola bar and fruit cup complete with a spoon, and a brownie wrapped in plastic wrap.

He’d made her lunch.

His third wife was one lucky bitch.
