If Maverick noticed, he didn’t comment. Instead he picked up Sawyer and said, “What should we do while your mommy is gone?” Then he walked out of the room deep in discussion with their five-day old.

It was weird walking into her house. She still loved her place, but after having spent the last few days in Maverick’s mansion where everything was the best of the best, she couldn’t help but notice where her place was lacking.

Not like her home was a shack; she’d been proud of it and always enjoyed having people over. But there was no comparison to where she’d been staying. Even her cats seemed to like it at Maverick’s.

But it was just temporary, until she managed to convince him that he really didn’t want to live with her, and joint custody would be best for everyone. Maybe once the holidays were over, he’d get on board.

“So, he’s treated you like a princess and is a great father… tell me again what the problem is? Why are you objecting to being with the father of your child?” Rose asked when Olivia called her from her car on the way back to Maverick’s. She’d wanted to have lunch but had to get back to feed the baby.

“I deserve what you and Chad have. I’m not going to be with a man just because he’s not an asshole and it’s convenient for me to live in the same house while we raise our child. If I’m going to be with someone, it’s going to be because we’re in love.”

“Okay, I get that. And I totally agree, by the way. You should have it all—love, family, and career. You deserve nothing less.”

At least someone got it.

Then he called her into his office when she got back, and she decided that love might have to wait. She had a better idea.

Why she chose to ignore that her last great idea had not gone according to plan would forever remain a mystery.

Maverick

“Everything go okay at your place?” he asked when she walked into his study.

“No problems. Nick was really sweet and stayed to load my suitcases into my car for me.”

He knew—he’d asked his son to do that.

“He’s a good kid,” was all Maverick said in reply.

She plopped down into a chair and looked at him with raised eyebrows. “So, what’s up?”

“I’m hiring a company to decorate for the holidays and was hoping to get your input. They have a whole catalog of colors, themes, etcetera, and I have no idea when it comes to that stuff.”

“You’rehiringsomeone? Why? We can put up a tree and some decorations, Pete.”

“You’re correct, and maybe next year we will. But I don’t want you overdoing it, and having professionals come in and do all the heavy lifting while you pick what you want and point where you want it seems like a better alternative. I have a feeling if I were to do it, you’d be inclined to try and help with the manual labor. Whereas if I’m paying someone, you’ll be more willing to let them do it.”

She considered him with pursed lips then sighed in defeat. “You’re not wrong.”

That elicited a knowing grin from him.

“Which brings me to the other thing I wanted to talk to you about… The other reason I want this place decorated.”

“Other than the holidays?” she quipped.

He slid a folder in front of her.

“What’s this?”

He waited until she’d pulled the prenuptial contract out and began reading it.

“I’d like to get married Christmas Eve. Here.”

She flipped through the pages, then looked up at him with narrowed eyes.
