“He hasn’t. It’s happening Christmas Eve at our place. Guests arrive at six for cocktail hour, and we’ll exchange vows at seven.”

“Oh, it’sourplace, now?”

“Well, I do live here.”

For now.

“What about your place, Olivia? Please tell me you’re not selling it. You’re going to want someplace to go when this thing blows up.”

While she’d been thinking the exact same thing, she didn’t need to hear it from Evan. She was going to put on the happy wife façade for everyone until after the wedding, when she made Maverick miserable enough to divorce her.

So her big brother needed to shut the hell up and let her do her thing.

There was a method to her madness.

“I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with it. Pete said he’d make the mortgage payment until I figure it out.”

Her plan was to be back in it by March first, right around when she went back to work.

Getting him to divorce her should be easy enough. Living with him, she’d already honed in on his weaknesses. After they said, ‘I do,’ on Christmas Eve, she’d exploit them, and soon he’d be begging his lawyers to draw up the divorce papers.

Not that she planned on keeping Sawyer from him once their marriage ended. He really was an awesome dad. They were just going to have to work out the schedule they should have in place already. And it was going to be onherterms.

“Anyway. You and Hope are welcome Christmas Eve. I know it’s last minute, so if you already have plans and can’t make it, I totally understand.

“Like I’m going to fucking miss my twin sister’s wedding. Even if it’s bullshit, and we both know it is.”

“Can’t you just wish me well like everyone else?”

“Well, I’m not everyone else—I know you, and this is not what you want, so no, I can’t just pretend this is awesome news. It’d be different if you loved him, Liv.”

I like him. Does that count?

Evan was making the same argument she’d had with herself, and with Maverick.

Unfortunately, Evan wasn’t done. “If you can look me in the eye the next time I see you and tell me you love him, then I’ll shut my mouth forever and wish you nothing but the best.”

“Promise?”

“I’ll know if you’re lying, Ollie.”

He was trying to bait her. The fact that he called her by that annoying nickname was proof.

“If you’re going to cause trouble, tell me now so I can uninvite you. Your girlfriend can still come, of course.”

“I am going on the record that I think this is a huge mistake, but if you still choose to go through with it, I will be on my best behavior.”

“Noted, and thank you. I’ll see you next week.”

Since it was such short notice, Maverick went to the trouble of having their guests’ invitations hand delivered. It was a small list, less than fifty people total. He invited his family: his brothers, Nick, his parents, and Nash—even making arrangements to fly his mom, dad, and son from Florida on a private jet once Olivia voiced her concern about them being around Sawyer after flying on a commercial plane.

Nash was only going to be there for two days, since that was the most time away the Navy would give him, but his parents were going to be in town for a week.

He also asked his other business partners, while she only invited her immediate family, and Rose and Chad. Maverick asked her if she wanted to invite her office staff or any other friends, but she declined.

“The fewer people I have to explain to that my husband divorced me, the easier it will be.”

He raised an eyebrow at her. “Not happenin’, darlin’.”
