“Of course.”

She almost dropped her coffee mug when Maverick walked into the kitchen wearing a suit and tie.

The man was panty-melting gorgeous in business attire.

“Wow. You look great.”

“I’m meeting with a group who wants me to invest in their coffee business.” He winked, “I have to look the part of Mr. Potter.”

That made her smile as she approached him to straighten the knot on his tie. “No, you’re definitely George Bailey.”

With a grin, he said, “I wasn’t sure if you’d get theIt’s a Wonderful Lifereference. And I’m no George Bailey.”

“I got it, and I beg to differ. You’re George—just ask Frank Symanski. And I’ll bet there’s a dozen other people exactly like Frank who you’ve helped."

She brushed his shoulders with the backs of her fingertips, then double tapped his chest. “You’re a good man, Pete Mitchell. Sawyer won the dad lottery when…” Olivia glanced down. “Well, I tricked you into getting me pregnant.”

He lifted her chin with his knuckle. “I’m thankful you did. I love—” he paused briefly, then continued, “that little boy more than I knew was possible. My only regret is that I didn’t know you were pregnant. I would have been your three a.m. cravings connection. And I would have put your furniture together, and not made you have Evan do it.”

“No, you wouldn’t have. You would have made me move in here sooner.”

He chuckled unapologetically. “Yeah, that’s true. But it would have been easier to handle your cravings that way.”

“Oh my god. I was either hungry or horny. My poor vibrator got a workout.”

“Why didn’t Casey help with that? With everything, really?”

She’d let that lie marinate for so long, there was no way she could get out of it now.

“Oh, he did, when he could. I mean, more the food part than anything. Me being pregnant with someone else’s baby made the sex part weird, so we decided we’d wait when it came to that.”

She thought that flowed with the other lies she’d spewed.

Maverick eyed her suspiciously. “And you aren’t in contact with him now?”

She swallowed hard.

I haven’t talked to him in over two years and don’t care if I ever do again.

“No. I’m waiting until our divorce is final. I wouldn’t do that to you.”

His scowl suggested he was skeptical of her answer, but he let the matter drop.

With a kiss to her forehead, he said, “I’ll be home before five. Drive carefully and thank your parents for me.”

“I will. Have fun playing Mr. Potter, George.”

Chapter Forty

Maverick

The next day, he went into the office again to get a few things done before D-Day. That was what he’d come to think of March tenth, the day she went back to work. He had no idea if she planned on moving out the weekend before. That would really suck.

The very idea of her leaving made him sick to his stomach, but he’d given her his word he’d file for divorce, so he wasn’t going to fight her about it.
